May is here and May 10th and May 24th will be the final meeting of the Thursday Luncheon Group at the Garden City Community Church. After that, they will take off for the summer and will come back in the fall. Virginia Fortney will do a program for seniors on exercise and Vicki Stanco and Irene Torino will be the hostesses. On the 24th of May they will hold the End of the Season luncheon and you are asked to make a reservation by calling the church office at 746-1700 between 9 and 3 by Monday, May 21st as that day luncheon will be provided. This is a very popular offering by the Garden City Community Church and can be enjoyed by all seniors whether church members or guests and they do a very good job of it.
The Cherry Valley Club held its April Dinner/Bridge on the 18th of April. (You remember that famous day and year when Paul Revere rode through the night) and while Paul was not present at this event there were 17 tables at play and everyone had a good time. The first Small Slam of the evening was made in 6 Diamonds by Theresa and Dom Casale. No Grand Slam was made (they were all out riding with Paul Revere) but Beth O'Neill and Alyce Kolman were the happy winners of the door prize - Gift Certificates to the Pro Shop at the Club. Ellie Singer, Marilyn O'Brien and many others were enjoying both the dinner and the bridge. Chairman George Rivara announced the date for the last Dinner/Bridge of the season would be May 16th and that reservations were necessary.
Happy birthday wishes go to Kathleen Maguire, who will be celebrating her special day on May 9th and to Bill Coffin who will do the same on the 11th of May. May they both have a wonderful day and a great year filled with health and happiness and may they have many more years to come.
Happy wedding Anniversary wishes go th Gloria and Arthur Mercante, who will be celebrating their 53rd anniversary and that is some milestone. May you have many more years together in which to enjoy good health, happiness, and all that you could wish for.
The annual Studio Exhibit of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead was really spectacular this year. An annual event by the Studio Department of the club, they have exhibits of rug hooking (and it's not all rugs), pastel painting, botanicals, oil and watercolor paintings. The teachers are professional and the work done by the classes is all in the professional category even though they started out as beginners. If you missed this show, they will have one again next year on the first Wednesday of May. The Chairpersons of the classes are Janet Littlejohn, Josephine Krawczyk, Renate Rego-Moneiro, Adrienne Cosgrove and Prem Chuhan. The show opened on May 2nd following the installation of the new officers for the 2007-2008 season of the club and it was open the next day free to one and all in the Village as it always is. This should be a "must see" for you next year. It is always held at the Garden City Casino.
The Garden City Branch of the A.A.U.W. will hold its Monday, May 7th Branch meeting at 7:30 p.m. at the Garden City Library. Margaret Heinrich will chair the meeting and Ann Senchyshyn will be in charge of refreshments and Laureen Clune will be happy to welcome you. The program will be a slide commentary on "A Glimpse of Kenya" by sisters Theresa and Mary Dinh. Sounds like a very interesting and timely program.
That's all for now folks - see you next week!
Let's hope that spring has finally sprung and we can easily see that the trees believe it as they are bursting forth with their blossoms. Thoughts of planting and bar-b-ques come to our minds and what could be more appropriate than a trip to a Barn Sale. As I told you last week, Grossmann's Farm will be holding their Barn Sale this weekend, May 5, 6, and 7 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 488 Hempstead Avenue, Malverne - rain or shine and cash only. It will have old farm tools, chairs from a long ago time and other items from their old farm home (it is an historic house), and items from their Country Dreams Shop. In other words - something for everyone. Stop by and step back in time while you take home a lasting memory of the Farm we all loved so much. See you there!
