Former Panama Canal Commission Chair to Speak

Robert R. McMillan Robert R. McMillan will be the featured guest speaker at the Garden City Republican Club's next meeting, which will be held on Wednesday, May 9th, 8:00 PM at the Garden City Senior Recreation Center, located on Golf Club Lane at the corner of 11th Street. The evening's topic will be his recently authored book "Global Passage:Transformation of Panama and the Panama Canal."

After running for the United States Senate in 1988 and winning editorial "praise" from The New York Times, Mr. McMillan was named by President George Bush to the Board of the Panama Canal Commission and confirmed by the United States Senate for the post on November 19, 1989. On October 27, 1993, Mr. McMillan was elected Chairman of the Commission's Board of Directors -- the first person who was not an official of the Department of Defense to serve as Chairman. He presided through October 1994. After serving as Chairman of the US-Panama Business Council (2000-2002), Mr. McMillan remains with that organization as a Director.

Mr. McMillan is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association, the first non-physician to serve on that Board. He also served on the Board of Directors of WellChoice, Inc. from 1995 through 2005, and today is a a Board Member of Madison National Bank.
