Gray Sweeties Heat Up In North Shore, Roll To 10-6 Victory
Great Defense by the 5th Grade Grey Sweeties
On a beautiful, sun-splashed afternoon, the Gray Sweeties 5th grade Girls Lacrosse team continued their winning ways with a convincing 10-6 victory. The win moved the Sweeties to 2-0 on the season, after a season-opening 5-4 win over Cold Spring Harbor.
The Sweeties started slowly, but a goal by Regan Marooney opened the scoring. Alex Riceman's goal on a free shot, the first of her two goals on the game, kept the score tied 2-2 at the end of the first quarter. Though North Shore started strongly, the Sweeties' superior passing ability and speed gave them the advantage and they took control in the second quarter. Meaghan Mulhall assisted on Erin Pfail's first goal of the game early in the second quarter to make the score 3-2. That was followed by a goal by Kayla Murphy, who was assisted by Haley O'Hanlon, to put the Sweeties up 4-3. After Erin's second goal (of three in the quarter and four for the game), Sage Fuller scored on an assist from Kelly Tierney. The attack players Taylor Will and Caitlin Rieger helped control the ball and put pressure on North Shore all game. The Sweeties went up 7-3 late in the quarter and maintained the lead at the half.
Great Passing by Gray Sweeties vs North Shore
While the offense started to get rolling, the defense also clamped down. After the Sweeties allowed two first quarter goals, the defense got stingy and limited the opponents' opportunities. North Shore scored only a single second quarter goal. Evan Molitar was strong in goal all game and made several key saves to preserve the lead. The defense was aggressive and was lead by Julia Dignam, Jacqueline O'Hare, Melanie McHugh and Kristen Rasquin. Jacqueline, Melanie and Sage lead the team with three ground balls each, and Kelly Tierney had two. The middies helped on defense as well, and Caitlin Mahland had an active game with two interceptions and good work on the ground balls as well. Jamie Sweet was also very active on ground balls and had some good runs to clear the ball out of trouble.
In the second half North Shore started with the advantage as they were behind by four goals. However, they could only get two goals in the third quarter and one in the fourth, as Evan made some great saves and the defense stayed strong to preserve the advantage. North Shore's two goals were matched the two scored by the Sweeties in the quarter. Alex scored her second goal of the game in the third quarter and Haley's goal made it 9-5 going into the fourth. In the fourth quarter, Jamie Sweet's pretty pass resulted in an assist on Erin Pfail's goal, which closed out the scoring and sealed the 10-6 victory.
Great Run Upfield into Offensive Zone
The Sweeties next play on April 29 and are on the road again. That game is in West Islip and starts at noon. The coaching staff appreciates the hard work by the players and the dedication and support of their parents, families and friends.
