News From The Children's Room
Tomorrow it's time to think about Mother's Day. The Children's Librarians of the Garden City Public Library have a great idea for a free Mother's Day gift that residents ages 2 1/2 through Grade 5 can give their mom, step-mom, grandmother or aunt. Starting tomorrow Saturday, April 28, they can come into the Children's Room, pick up free tickets (for themselves and that special someone) to a production of "The Wizard of Oz" and receive a free kit to make a Mother's Day card. The "Wizard of Oz" is a live Plaza Theatrical Production and will be held at the Garden City Public Library on Saturday, May 12 at 3:00 PM. Children must take tickets to the show in order to receive the card kit. So on May 12, let's all be off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz.
April is poetry month. Red are my roses, blue are my bonnets. Stop by the library and check out some sonnets.
Two famous authors who were born in April are Ludwig Bemelmans (author of the Madeline books) and David Kirk (author of the Miss Spider books). Come to the library and find out about their lives and read one (or two) of their books.
Please check the library website www.gardencitypl.org for upcoming events and registration dates. Funding for these programs has been provided by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library. Priority for registration and participation is given to children who are Garden City Public Library cardholders.
What's Up For Young Adults
At The Library
The New YA Department
If you are having trouble finding what you are looking for in the YA Department be sure to ask and the staff can find. Your patience is asked while the YA Department becomes bigger and better. Most of the books are here just in a different place. As the project progresses through the summer you will be kept up to date.
Teens and Tots Storytime at the G.C.
Pool Training Sessions
There may still be a chill in the air but it is time to start thinking about what to do over the summer. Young Adults who will be in grades 6 - 12 in September 2007 are invited to share their time and talents with youngsters aged 2-8 during July and August at the Garden City Pool. Continuing a twenty year tradition, the Library in cooperation with the Garden City Department of Recreation will be holding "Teens & Tots Storytime" at the pool on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons beginning July 10 and ending August 8. If a Young Adult has participated in the past, a letter will be sent inquiring as to availability this summer. If this is the first summer you are eligible or available, it is necessary for the volunteer to be trained. The Young Adult Department held training sessions in April. All volunteers must be trained. If you are interested but were unable to attend the formal trainings, please contact the Young Adult Librarian to arrange an alternative training. New volunteers may inquire by phone or by email to mkelly@gardencitypl.org.
For more information on these and future programs check the Garden City Public Library's website at www.gardencitypl.org. Funding for these programs has been provided by the Friends of the Garden City Public Library.
