The news always seems to be so bad in the papers that we all long for a good heart warming story of how things work out for the best. Well, I am going to tell you a true story about that happening right here in Garden City. It all started with a question from Paula Riga at a meeting about doing something for our troops. Another lady present said she had read something about sending items to our troops that they needed and she would find out about it. Find out she did and got a list of things to send and things not to send from an American Legion Magazine. She then called the Legions Woman's Auxiliary President Joan Nedelka who said she would take it up with her board. Next the lady called the Boy Scout Troop leader at the Garden City Community Church - Mike Abatemarce, who said it would be a good project for a Boy Scout going for his Eagle Badge. He did not have a Scout going for that badge and gave the lady the names of several Troop leaders and the first call was Mark Gamber whose troop meets at St. Joseph's Church and he would get back to her. He did with the name of a Junior at Garden City High who is going for his Eagle badge. The Commander of the Garden City Legion Post also talked to the lady and they will provide help and money for shipping. You will be reading of the progress of this wonderful story in this paper shortly and perhaps we can all assist this young man in his quest to help our troops and earn his badge. This is what talking to people can bring you - cooperation in getting something worthwhile done and bring a warmth to your heart and a smile to your lips. Keep tuned in.

The Ladies Luncheon/Bridge was held at the Garden City Casino this past week and enjoying the afternoon were Marilyn Camp, Jean Priest, Joan O'Connell, Agnes Rimmels, Trudy Anderson, Kris Harder, and Barbara Degroot. They may or may not have come out with big scores but they all left with a big smile on their faces and that's what really counts.

There was a wonderful concert at Adelphi University that also took place this past week when the Trio Solisti not only played but also gave a discussion of the program by the artists. One of the works was composed by a Faculty member and he explained the history of his work, which added so much to the actual performance. Enjoying the evening were: Joan Kuster, Alice Brown, Marilyn Flynn and Joan Repetto.

Speaking of Adelphi, the Friends of the Adelphi University Library held their Board meeting on Campus and heard a presentation by Laura Ludlam from the Early Learning Center who showed them what the new Center would look like. The building will be named The Alice Brown Center after Alice who served as Director for so many years. What a well deserved tribute to such a nice lady.

Happy Birthday wishes go to Eileen Dower, who will celebrate her special day on the 30th of April and to Ada Kane, who will do ditto on May 1st. May both lovely ladies have a wonderful day and a great year with many more years to come to enjoy both good health and much happiness.

Happy Wedding Anniversary wishes go to Gloria and Arthur Mercante , who will be celebrating their 53rd Anniversary just about now. What a record and may you have many more years of wedded bliss in which to enjoy all the best that life can offer.

Spring finally arrived and can you believe how fast all the buds have burst out to make those ice storms fade away. Welcome sweet springtime - we greet you with joy.

Unfortunately a wonderful lady left us recently and she will be missed by one and all. She worked hard for her church - the Garden City Community Church, for her Club - The Community Club of Garden City of which she served as President, and the D.A.R. of which she served in many aspects and as Regent. She had many other honors and I'm sure you know that I refer to Margaret (Peg) Musil . Our thoughts and prayers go to her daughter and to all of her family in their time of sorrow.

Gardeners' Alert: Barn Sale Saturday and Sunday May 5 and 6 at Grossman Farms - more next week.

That's all for now - I have to pick some flowers and bring spring inside the house. See you next week!
