Destroyers Beat Eagles In Tournament
Conor Sproat drives a goal kick deep
On Saturday, March 24, the U-10 Garden City Destroyers took the field for round one of the Waldbaums Cup. The Destroyers came away with a victory against the Plainedge Eagles. In what was a fantastic win, the Destroyers have punched their own ticket to the second round of the Waldbaums Cup. Right from the start the Destroyers controlled the ball keeping most of the action in the Plainedge Eagles end of the field. Good passing between the forwards Mohacsi, Hammersley, Evangelista, Sarkis and Gormley kept the Eagles defense guessing where the next shot on goal was going to come from. The defense was solid and very aggressive. Punturo, Choi, Sproat, Mullahey, and Furey made sport of chasing down players that rarely broke through the defense and stopped almost all the Eagles attempts at shots on goal. Ollerich who made a bunch of stops allowing only one seeing eye-ball to make it into the net handled the few shots that did make it on goal. Excellent play by all was the key to the 3-1 Destroyers' victory.
Last Saturday, March 31, the Destroyers played their first league game of the spring season against the Hicksville Bombers. The Destroyers had the home field advantage and entered the game with great energy and high hopes. Conor Sproat, who had his first try in goal, displayed great ability with a keen eye and quick response to any action brought his way. The Hicksville Bombers scored a quick goal in the first period for a lead of 1-0. This however, did not dampen the Destroyers enthusiasm. Andrew Mohacsi had two strong attempts on goal in both a penalty kick in the first half and a free kick in the second. The Destroyers came back after the half with a passion and showed the Bombers what a strong team they have become. Mohacsi tied up the game scoring off a pass from William Hammersley. The defense kept a tight line and most of the play stayed in Bombers territory. Harry Furey, Matt Mullahey & Brandon Choi continually fought hard for possession and got the ball into a position that the offense was able to capitalize on. John Evangelista played an incredible game and kept the pressure on. Nick Sarkis, Andrew Mohacsi, William Hammersley and Christopher Gormley created an offense that kept the Bombers on their toes. Chris Gormley had an amazing five shots on goal with one shot banging off the post in a disappointing attempt. His talk on the field kept the offensive line on side and on track. William Hammersley had two attempts that the Bombers goalie picked off and one strong boot that also banged off the post making neighbors take notice. With assists from Mohacsi, Gormley and Furey, Hammersley scored his first ever "HAT TRICK" with an amazing three goals in this electrifying game. The Hicksville Bombers will not forget the impact this team made. With a 4-1 victory over Hicksville, the season is off to a great start. Congratulations to the Destroyers 2-0 start! Way to Go!
