U-11 Demons Begin Season
At the end of the 2006 Fall Season, the Albertson Attack and the Garden City Demons finished atop the Nassau Division 2 standings. The teams were separated by one point and although the Attack eventually won the division, the Demons enjoyed a 6-3 victory at Albertson. For their efforts, both teams were promoted to Nassau Division 1 this season. The Demons took to the road once again as they opened their Spring, 2007 campaign in sunny but windy conditions at Albertson. The Demons were missing three of their players, limiting them to one substitute, but from the opening whistle they displayed a strong sense of confidence in the early going. Any rust that remained from being idle during the winter months quickly dissipated as the Demon defense led by Jack Tigh, Mark DeSantis and Dale Stasco was up to each challenge the Attack strikers had waged. Substitute goalkeeper Jack Gillan looked sharp turning away several scoring chances. Demon Strikers Matthew Rogers and Danny Simmons worked extremely well with Peter Escribano, Greg Vouzianas and Mike Randazzo in midfield as they penetrated the Attack defensive zone on numerous occasions. The Demons challenged hard for every 50/50 ball. Albertson possessed some size in midfield and when possible, they played the ball into the middle in an effort to break through Tigh and DeSantis. The first quality chance for the Demons came on a long through pass to Matthew Rogers who streaked past a central defender, deked the goalkeeper, but shot just wide of the net. Minutes later the Attack manufactured a nice through ball themselves as Jack Tigh and an opposing striker were in lock step racing toward the Demon goal. A defensive miscommunication enabled the Albertson striker to get the last touch on the ball for a goal and the Attack were up 1-0 at halftime.
The second half commenced and the Demons were determined to gain the better of the scoring chances. Dale Stasco was up front to begin the half and he, along with partners Mike Randazzo and Matt Rogers clicked immediately. The Demon defense tightened up and the intensity of the match was rising. Several minutes into the half, Danny Simmons was fouled above the eighteen setting up a direct kick for the Demons. Greg Vouzianas, always keen to make a difference during such sequences launched a high shot that the Albertson goalkeeper knocked down in front of him unable to control. Matthew Rogers made him pay by rifling a left footed volley into the back of the net to level the score. From that moment, the Demons increased the pressure. Will Harrington and Mark DeSantis did a marvelous job of controlling the ball and moving it up field to Peter Escribano. The Demons displayed two and three-touch passing with precision. Mike Randazzo used his speed to keep the pressure on the Albertson fullbacks and twice won control of balls passing to Simmons and Rogers for shots at the goal. A little more than midway through the half during a pressure situation, Escribano had the ball at the sideline, passed to Rogers who shot a laser into the far upper 90 of the goal where the post meets the crossbar. At first glance, the ball appeared to have gone into the goal only to come right back out because of the force of the shot. The Demon fans started to celebrate but the referee waived it off saying the ball never went completely into the net. It was tough to tell and the momentum seemed to tilt for a bit toward Albertson as a minute or two later Mike Randazzo was called for fouling a striker and on the ensuing direct kick the ball hit the crossbar above Jack Gillan. It bounced out of harms way but soon afterwards Albertson came right back and scored from distance to take the lead at 2-1. However, the Demons did not give up for they controlled the half and were determined to turn the game around. Just minutes from full time, they had the Albertson fullbacks once again trying to fend off oncoming strikers. Deep in Albertson territory, Dale Stasco controlled a ball in the corner, passed back to Will Harrington, who found Matthew Rogers moving in the middle toward the goal. Rogers received the ball and fired a right footed shot beyond the goalkeeper's reach to tie the score at 2-2 and minutes later an exciting contest had reached its conclusion.
After a week off for Spring break, the Demons travel to Levittown before opening up at home. Terrific comeback boys and nice job to Jack Gillan who filled in for Ray Leto between the sticks. Let's Go Demons!
