The Garden City boys varsity lacrosse team opened its season on Friday, March 23rd. In his first game as head coach, Steve Finnell was welcomed with an 18-1 victory over Mepham. Dean Gibbons lead the Trojans scoring with five goals, followed by Dan Savage who scored four. Matt Losardo and Ryan Lynch each scored twice while Dillon Dwyer, John Betts, Tim Harder, Francis McDonough and Tim Holman each contributed to Garden City's scoring. Goalkeeper Brian McCullough had five saves while Drew Tice and Peter Costello combined for three more.
The following day, in a non- league game against Smithtown West, the Trojans lost 13-8. Dean Gibbons, who set the record for the most goals in a single season last year, was held to just one goal.
Tomorrow, Saturday, March 31st at 7pm, the team will travel to Manhasset for the annual Woodstick Classic. This is the oldest continuous lacrosse rivalry in the country and it all began back in 1935. This will be the 116th time these two teams have met for what has traditionally become one of the most exciting games of the season. The 2005 and 2006 games proved to be just that as each game went into sudden death overtime with the Trojans winning both of those games.
