GCAA Travel Basketball.........
Nine of our teams made the playoffs of the highly competitive Island Garden Super League..........six of the nine teams won at least one playoff game......four teams made the semis........three reached the finals with one team winning their division and another still awaiting their championship matchup !!!!!..........Here's some of the highlights: KELLY 5TH BOYS finished the season with a tremendous effort against the AAU team LI Trotters in the Division 1 playoffs. The boys played great towards the end of the season winning 5 out of 6 games to put them into the playoffs.
The Trotters, winners of 10 straight games entering the playoffs,
have been a regular opponent of the GCAA team beating them handily 2 weeks earlier as well as eliminating them from the playoffs last year.
The team gathered for a late practice the night before the game. The purpose was to devise a defensive plan to stop the Trotters 6 foot center, " Little Shaq".
The boys executed the game plan to perfection. For the majority of the game, the undersized GCAA -Kelly team was beating a team that was significantly bigger than they were. This was a true team effort as every boy had a great game. It was the best game that the boys played all year. Congratulations to John Cauchi, Michael Collins, Mark DeSantis, Patrick Finneran, Jack Gillan, Matthew Kelly, Jack Lucchesi, Tim McDonagh, Kevin Mullin and Luke Zeccola for a great season. They all played great against some very good teams in this division...........TULLY 5TH BOYS season included an 11-7 record, a second place finish in the Holiday Tournament, and a last-second overtime win in our first playoff game. The team relied all season on the slick ball-handling and sharp-shooting of their backcourt that included Brian Tully, Cody George, Tim Feyrer, Carney Mahon, Ethan Gibbons and Kieran Byrnes. Front-court players who dominated the boards and provided key baskets every game were Danny Dolan, Conor Byrnes, Tommy Leggett, Kyle Driscoll, Cullen Minion and Robert Wotczak. Assistant Coaches Ray George and John Feyrer kept the "Mean Machine" firing on all cylinders from the first game through the last............KIFFEL 7TH GIRLS, after beating the LI Shore Shots in the quarterfinals, lost to Long Beach 32-24 in the semifinals to end the season 14-6. Up by 2 at halftime, led by a tenacious girl to girl defense, it was a close game all the way through. We had to foul them with a few minutes to go and they made their foul shots. These two teams had playedearlier in the year and GC lost by 16 - this game was symbolic of the whole season - the girls got better and better as the season wore on. Over the past three seasons this age group has gone 37-11 at Island Garden, with more then half the losses were at the hands of AAU caliber teams. They should be considered one of the best "town" teams around led defense, intense rebounding and good ball handling. The girls are Alex Bruno, Marissa Cameron, Maggie Comiskey, Catherine Dickinson, Megan Harney, Julia Kiffel, Christina Mangels, Caitlin McGuiness, Kelly Sprotte, Jess Stein, and Katie Trimmer........WALCZYK 5TH GIRLS, after having won the regular season title in their division, lost in their playoff final. Their overall record was a sparkling 17-4..........RAPHAEL 4TH GIRLS finished the season with the best record amongst all 4th grade girls teams. The team received outstanding play from all the girls, Jillian Curtin, Emma Gallagher, Annemarie Kane, Alexis Leighton, Kelly McDonald, Lauren Miesemer, Samantha Miesemer, Shannon Raphael, Katie Roscoe and Joanna Sokolovic.........CAPETOLA 7TH BOYS, as of this writing was awaiting a finals matchup versus St. Bernard's. The team is riding the momentum of two playoff wins by a total of three points attained earlier in the week.............GRANVILLE 4TH BOYS finished the regular season on a high note with 2 consecutive victories in the highly competitive Division 1. The team then won their first round playoff game against the Heat-Efros. Despite a great effort, the team then lost in the quarter-finals to the LI Heat. Throughout the season, Brian Colamussi and Ryan Smith spearheaded a potent passing attack while Pat Gibbons and Michael Flood utilized deft perimeter shooting to lead the offensive attack. Kyle Brattan, Colin D'Angelo, Jonathan Granville, Connor Muldoon, Tom Tubridy and Tom Wright also provided major contributions throughout the season........RAPHAEL 8TH BOYS won all three of their playoff contests which enabled them to be crowned champions of Division III. Their overall record was 18-4. Well done !!!!!..........Congratulations to all the GCAA Travel Basketball Teams, it was a trmendously successful season !!!! Thanks to all the parents, coaches and most of all the kids for your year long support
