Support Bake Sale

To the Editor:

St. Joseph parish's annual Palm Sunday Bake Sale to support our pro-life activities will be held this Sunday, April 1st in the St. Agnes Room after all Masses from 7:30 A.M to 1 P.M.. We invite all to join us and take home a delicious dessert for your Palm Sunday dinner.

We also ask our many friends here in Garden City to consider donating a few of your home-made specialties (cakes, pies, cupcakes, cookies, or brownies - to name a few) to support our parish's only pro-life fund raiser. The proceeds will be used to support the practical, educational, and spiritual efforts of our parish on behalf of pre-born babies and their mothers.

To help in this most worthy effort, please call Mary Ellen at 877-1310.

Baked items may be delivered to the St. Agnes Room any time between 7:30 A.M and 11:00 A.M. on Palm Sunday.

Thank you and God bless you.

Code Needed

To The Editor:

The cavalier remarks of the head of the School Board, which can be found in last week's Garden City News, relating to a Code of Ethics, were very disappointing, especially since the two employees who answered the phone in the administrative office when I called did not even know whether a Code of Ethics existed.

It is the intent of the municipal law that every officer and employee be given a copy of the Code of Ethics so that they will be aware of its prohibitions. Obviously this requirement was not fulfilled.

The so-called Code of Ethics which can be found in several different parts of the Policy manual of the School Board is not so labeled, requires time to ferret out from among many writings and does not cover as many prohibitions as the model code.

Further, I was unable to locate any references to a Code of Ethics Board, which would supervise its enforcement.

What is occurring all over Long Island leaves citizens concerned about how their taxes are being spent, especially in the areas of nepotism, consultants and business related transactions. As many safeguards as possible should be welcomed.

What do you think?

Joseph A. Calamari

P.S. The Village of Garden City on the other hand has a separate Code of Ethics and an Ethics Board. All that is needed is an updating of the Code to cover more areas and a more active Board of Ethics consisting of attorneys, accountants and lay people not doing business with the Village and not relatives of decision making persons.

P.P.S. New York State and Nassau County have awakened to the need of a Code of Ethics with "teeth." Let's see what steps are taken by our Village and School Board to accomplish the foregoing.
