Newly elected Bird Sanctuary Directors Tom and Carline Rechner
Newly elected Bird Sanctuary Directors Tom and Carline Rechner The Garden City Board of Directors voted to elect Thomas and Caroline Rechner as new members of the Board of Directors for 2007. Tom and Caroline have been active members during the last year, and had donated an oak leaf holly and red twig dogwood for the memorial walk. They are both enthusiastic birders and will work in collaboration to focus on the many species of birds seen and nesting at the community nature preserve. The "lifetime" checklist of species continues to grow as they reported a woodcock recently seen in Garden City.

Caroline also very much enjoys gardening and has joined the Bird Sanctuary gardening programs. The Rechners will also team up to help coordinate the annual Backyard Bird Count for the Cornell Ornithological Lab.

Also joining the Board of Directors are Laura Napoli and Joe Dilallo. Laura and Joe are the Bird Sanctuary's first student representatives from Adelphi University. They are members of Adelphi's Environmental Action Coalition where Laura is current Vice President. The group has been active supporters, volunteering for work sessions at the Bird Sanctuary, and pledging volunteer work as part of the successful Community Tree Planting grant application to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. At school, they are planning on an Earth Fest for Monday April 23 with guest demonstrations by the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary's Birds of Prey. They will be primarily responsible for coordinating community service programs and outreach for opportunities by Adelphi students at the Bird Sanctuary.
