Book Discussion Group
Gloria Weinrich, Panel Moderator, has announced the title of the next book to be discussed on Wednesday, April 28 from 10:00 a.m. until noon in the small downstairs meeting room under the auspices of The Friends of the Library.
Published seventy years ago in 1937, John Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men still retains its power and literary brilliance. It tells the story of two itinerant workers who arrive in the Salinas Valley in California. Lenny is a big, severely limited worker who does not know his own strength. George serves as Lenny's constant companion and protector. They have dreams of one day owning their own farm but, as Robert Burns poem declares, "the best laid plans of mice and men gang aft a-gley."
No registration is necessary but participation is limited to 20 patrons. Books may be picked up at the Reference Desk beginning on March 25th.
As an added treat, the classic 1939 film version of this classic will be screened at 12:30 p.m. It stars Burgess Meredith, Lon Chaney, Jr. and Betty Field with a music score by Aaron Copeland. You need not have participated in the discussion to attend the film presentation.
