What's Up For Young Adults

At The Library

PART II; SATURDAY AFTERNOON MOVIES FOR YA'S

& YAK & SNACK: THE CHOCOLATE WAR

On April 14th at 1 PM, the Young Adult Department will be showing the movie, Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker. This film is based on the best selling young adult adventure series of books by Anthony Horowitz. The story focuses on Alex Rider, played by Alex Pettyfer, a 14 year old orphan who has been unwittingly trained all his life by his uncle in the skills to become a secret agent. When his uncle/guardian is assassinated, Alex is recruited to take over an assignment which requires him to infiltrate a computer manufacturing plant and stop the release of a biological weapon. If you have read the book, see how it has been dramatized. If not, see the movie and then pick the sequels in the young adult book section.

The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier is the book selected to be read and discussed at the next Yak & Snack session to be held on April 21st at 2 PM. Register and pick up a copy of this book now. It is the story of Jerry Renault, a young man who refuses to participate in his school's annual fund raiser - a chocolate bar sale. As a result he suffers consequences and incurs the wrath of the school bullies. This story is as timely today as it was 30 years ago when it was first published. Come and share your thoughts about and experiences with bullies.

Refreshments will be served at the movie and at the book discussion.

TEENS AND TOTS STORYTIME AT THE G.C. POOL

TRAINING SESSIONS

There may still be a chill in the air but it is time to start thinking about what to do over the summer. Young Adults who will be in grades 6 - 12 in September 2007 are invited to share their time and talents with youngsters aged 2-8 during July and August at the Garden City Pool. Continuing a twenty year tradition, the Library in cooperation with the Garden City Department of Recreation will be holding "Teens & Tots Storytime" at the pool on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons beginning July 10 and ending August 8. If a Young Adult has participated in the past, a letter will be sent inquiring as to availability this summer. If this is the first summer you are eligible or available, it is necessary for the volunteer to be trained. The Young Adult Department will be conducting training sessions beginning March 31st. All volunteers must attend one meeting of each session to be trained. Session I trains the volunteer in reading aloud techniques, book selection, finger plays, games and group control techniques.
