Cathedral Sponsors Habitat For Humanity Group
George Tietjen presents the facts about Habitat for Humanity to potential volunteers.
On Sunday, March 18, George Tietjen, a member of the Cathedral of the Incarnation, made a presentation to those interested in participating in Habitat for Humanity projects. There was an excellent turn out and 30 volunteers signed up at the meeting. Habitat for Humanity helps those people whose income is below a designated amount to become homeowners. The property for the homes is purchased through funds raised and though donations from corporations and individuals. Materials for building are purchased through the same sources. The persons selected to own the home are given a mortgage that covers the purchase price of the land and the cost of the materials to build the home. They are required to repay the mortgage in regular monthly payments. The potential homeowners must also give a certain amount of "sweat equity" to help build their new home.
Mr. Tietjen spoke about his experience in the current Habitat for Humanity project in Lakeview. He mentioned how people of all ages have become friends while helping a worthy cause. He explained that one does not need prior experience with construction. All that will be taught to those willing to participate. In fact, he mentioned that a bonus to volunteering is that one becomes a handyman at his/her own home. Besides construction, there is landscaping and other tasks that need to be done to bring a house to completion. Each Habitat for Humanity Group works on assigned Saturdays and sometimes Wednesdays. The group does not meet every Saturday. This is helpful to those who might have other weekend commitments.
There is still room for more volunteers. One does not have to be a member of the Cathedral congregation to participate. If you are interested in volunteering, please call the Cathedral Office at 746-2955 and leave a message for Mr. Tietjen.
