There were two mass murders in Garden City last week and they took place in two homes that were attached to each other. You have not read about this in the paper, heard it on TV or the radio, but it did happen and neighbors are in mourning about it. I am of course reporting on the deaths of 6 unborn sparrows in a duplex bird house in a residents' yard. The killer was a starling and the parents of the unborn birds have been fluttering from tree to tree desperately looking for another home in time to raise another brood in time for Spring. This you might say is part of all life and you are right, but that does not take away from the sadness of it all. If it were people of course it would be different but not less sad. The resident hung out a new bird house and the parents are busy establishing a new nest and new life. Truly a happy ending to nature's story.

The Garden City Country Club is open again after their early winter closing for cleaning etc. and their Dinner/Bridge was held on March 14th complete with Corned Beef and Cabbage on the menu. The luck of the Irish was not evident that night as there was no Small or Grand Slam made during the evening. The snowbird members have not returned as yet, but enjoying the dinner were Louise and Tom Butler, Nancy and John Pastula, Betty McCarthy, Gwen Duff, and Pat Dollan. Pat came fresh from her St. Joseph's St. Patrick's Bridge which played to a packed house. The Garden City Country Club's Bridge Chairlady, Muriel Urban, announced that the next Dinner/Bridge would be held on Wednesday, April 11th due to the preceding week being Holy Week. Don't forget to make your reservations for this affair.

The very next day at the very same place - the Garden City Country Club, the Ladies/Lunch/Bridge was held and there were 28 tables in play following lunch. The luck seemed to be better that day and a Small Slam was dealt, bid and made by Fran DeAngelo and Lucille Tilitz. The monthly Door Prize was won by Madelene Kenny. Muriel Urban, Bridge Chairlady, announced that the next Ladies Bridge would be held on Thursday, April 19th and that reservations were necessary.

Prem Chauhan, Drama/Literature Chairlady for the Community Club of Garden City and Paula Rega, Corresponding Secretary for the same club were at Hofstra University enjoying a lecture on the Bronze Age of Troy by the Archeological Institute of America, L.I. Society. Good for you ladies - always good to learn something new.

Happy Birthday wishes go to Rosalie Jahelke, who celebrated her special day on the 19th of March and to John Christie, who will celebrate his Birthday on the 26th of this month and to Pat Sheehan, who blows out the candles on her cake on the 28th. May you all have a wonderful day and a great year ahead in which to have nothing but good health and much happiness.

A long time resident of Garden City, who now resides in Williamsburg, Va. - Mary Tobercoff, will be celebrating her 100th Birthday on March 27th. Mary was a member of the Community Club of Garden City and Hempstead for many years and is still an out-of-town member and also of the Garden City Club where she played at the Ladies Bridge. Her good friend Eda Meglio told me about this and we do wish her many happy returns of the day - 100 is quite a record.

Nassau County Homemakers Council Garden City Chapter will be hosting their annual Bridge and Card Party on Wednesday, April 11th from 12 to 4 p.m. at the Garden City Community Church. Theresa Ragazzi and Rosemary Going are chairing the event and Norma Takach is taking the reservations - $20 per person for Sandwiches, Dessert, Coffee or Tea - at 15 Glen Road, Garden City New York, 11530. It sounds good to me.

I guess the Luck of the Irish was all used up on the 17th so that the Parade (246 years old) could be held in spite of the terrible ice and snow storm on Friday. You can't spread luck too thin and the parade took first place. It's Spring now officially so I hope things will get better. See you next week.
