Letters To The Editor

Email: editor@ gcnews.com

In furtherance of my letter to the editor of last week, Governor Spizer was inspired to tighten the New York State of Ethics, because as attorney general he became aware of all of the loopholes in the old one, which permitted individuals to play fast and loose with the monetary expenditures of the State. He hoped, in addition, to energize the citizens of local governments and school districts to strengthen their codes. Some ogregious examples were a building department head rebuilding his own home without permits and school boards that were so loosely run that expenditures were approved inappropriately and even criminally.

Re-writing the codes of ethics and creating Ethics Committees or strengthening those already in existence by shining a spotlight on their activities is always helpful.

What do you think?

Joseph A. Calaman

P.S. the Code of Ethics that I wrote for the WPOA could easily be revised to accommodate the Village, if requested. The Model Code could also be adopted by the Village and the school board with minor modifications.

P.P.S. The Nassau County Ethics toughens some provisions and requires the County Board of Ethics approving others and permits fines up to $10,000.

A Fond Farewell

To the Editor:

It seems like only yesterday, but for more than thirty wonderful years Things and Stuff of Garden City and our many loyal customers whom we consider to be more like friends have all been such a large part of our lives.

The time has come for Elliott and I to say goodbye but Things and Stuff will continue to thrive with your continued support under the capable ownership of Cindy and Jaro who reside in Garden City.

We have shared so many memorable times both happy and sad with our customers and wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for your patronage, support and friendship. Elliott and I will be in the store for the next month, so please stop in to meet Cindy and Jars and allow us to enjoy one more laugh or shed a tear together.

Our wish to all of you is continued good health and happiness.

Linda and Elliott
