GC Volunteer Firefighters Assist Eagle Scout

Ceremonial Flag burning is conducted under supervision of volunteer firefighters.
On Saturday, December 16th, Garden City volunteer firefighters assisted Boy Scout Mike Lanciotti, of Garden City, in his Eagle project which was to properly retire American Flags that are no longer in good shape to use. Mike Lanciotti collected hundreds of old American flags and gathered with his troop and Garden City volunteer firefighters along with a fire pumper to conduct a respectful and honorable ceremony to properly retire the flags. When the flag is in such condition, through wear or damage, that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it shall be destroyed in a dignified manner befitting such a symbol. Properly burning of the flag is considered the best way to retire a flag. It was a patriotic and rewarding experience for all those involved. Chief John P. Casey of the Fire Department commented "that this was yet another excellent way for our volunteer firefighters to support our community, and at the same time, the patriotism of America." He also noted, "That after our recent successful Operation Wounded Warrior campaign, this was yet another fitting opportunity for our volunteer firefighters to show our support for our nation and our future leaders."
