Clear Route Before Race

To the Editor:

As a resident of Hampton Road, I have enjoyed watching the runners of the Turkey Trot going past our house every Thanksgiving for many years. I do think, however, that we owe it to the runners to have the route as cleaned up as possible at this time of year. On the Friday before Thanksgiving Hampton Road from Stewart Ave to Merillon Ave was packed full of leaves in high mounds waiting for pick up. Unfortunately Thanksgiving came and went and the mounds were still with us.

Having lost a friend many years ago to running on slick leaves at this time of year, I am aware of some of the dangers. I do not know how the Turkey Trot of 2006 would have played out if the weather on that day was more inviting and we had many more runners. Let's rectify this situation for next year's event. Hopefully the weather and a cleaned up route will add to the pleasure of all.

Annual Baby Shower

To the Editor:

We cordially invite our fellow village residents to help spread the joy of Christmas by participating in this year's Annual Baby Shower which will be held on Saturday and Sunday, December 9th and 10th, following all Masses at St. Joseph's Church and Auditorium.

This will be the 16th consecutive year that the parish has hosted the Baby Shower, and the generosity of Garden City residents in the past has been overwhelming. Caring neighbors have donated home-made and new baby items that have been distributed to Long Island's crisis pregnancy centers in time for Christmas.

Some of the gifts included layette items, disposable diapers, stretchies, blankets, sweaters, booties and caps, pajamas, infant formula, to name a few. Gifts were also donated for the mothers, including personal hygiene items (soap, shampoo, toothpaste, and laundry detergent). Metro Cards and phone cards were also donated to the mothers.

The Baby Shower culminates a nine-month prayer program which began last March when parishioners and area-residents pledged to pray daily for babies in danger of abortion and to pray for the mothers and fathers of those babies.

You may place your Baby Shower gifts in designated Christmas boxes at the doors of St. Joseph's Church and Auditorium following all Masses on Saturday and Sunday, December 9th and 10th.

Garden City residents in need of Crisis Pregnancy Information may call the following confidential pregnancy centers: Life Center - 631-243-2373, Birthright - 516-741-4030, and MOMMA's House - 516-781-8637. Also, for anyone who has been a victim of abortion, confidential post-abortion counseling for women and men is available at the Life Center - 631-243-2373.

Thank you and God Bless You.

Bare Knuckles

To The Editor:

It is my fervent hope that my letter to our Garden City News dated July 14, had something to do with the defeat of Mrs. Clinton in Garden City by 65% to 35% as she chose to stroll for another six year term in our Senate.

The 65% cast for Spencer represents the largest number of votes cast against Mrs. Clinton in any community, both in Nassau and Suffolk. I applaud those taxpayer voters who said no, we don't want you, get lost and take Billy Goat with you.

Mrs. Clinton is a superb liar, well, perhaps that is too strong. I do not accuse her of being a congenital liar as did Bill Safire in The New York Times. The truth is not in her, she cannot be trusted, ever. Commander in Chief? Ha Ha Ha. So, will she in fact run for the Presidency, will the American people cede our White House to the two of them? Yes, if you choose one you must also take the other. A two fer, chew on that a bit.

If Mrs. Clinton should decide the run for the roses is too dicey she may deign to accept a seat on the U.S. Supreme Court. With the Democrats in control of both the Senate and the House she would be a shoo-in. We would then have her on our backs for the rest of her life. Well, relax a bit, this cuckold reeks of lust for our White House, vindication, and the opportunity to put Billy Goat where he belongs. In political hell, walking six steps behind. Hey, Mrs. Clinton didn't roll over for nothing.

The Republican Party has lost, the Democrats have won, and we the people? Well, I just don't know but out of this mess, this debacle, we must bring forth some good. Politicians are expendable. Chew 'em up and spit 'em out, most are worth nothing and that applies to every level of government. They have so fragmented the people that like dogs we tear at each other's throats.

Although I believe we recognize the many issues which rip us apart the conduct and conclusion of the war on terror is number one. Fight any war all out, define win and then do it. Declare victory and go home to fortress America. Admittedly a dangerous strategy.

Over a period of years it has been demonstrated that our political system will not win a war. We have been losers since World War Two. Our young people, fighting political wars, have died for nothing. They have carried the bloody load, alone and for too long. War is not about love, it is about respect and fear. Having established those qualities among our enemies we may then discuss reconstruction.

The Election of 2008 is upon us. We will attempt to separate the wheat from the chaff, to vote for the least worst of the bunch as they slit each other's throats, and in the process destroy what once was our country.

The plaintive voice pleads, "Can't we all just get along?" Well, it seems not. Folks, the gloves are off, from here on it is bare knuckles.
