Thunder Maroon 10's Win Big In Big Wind

Let's get this party started!
Despite brutal conditions, the Thunder Maroon 10's won a hard fought, physical game down in Long Beach last Sunday. The previous meeting between these two was decided by one point, so both teams knew it would be close game.

Strong wind gusts made the running game of the Thunder all the more important. Offensive Line Coach Ireland put it best; "It was as windy as a Chili Eating Contest out there, so we needed to get the running game going early."

Offensive stalwart Anthony Preziosi set the tempo early, with strong running behind the right side of the line, and the new backfield-by-committee really kept the chains moving. Running backs Ryan Guarino, Mike Keating, Kyle Harder and Liam Sugrue all pounded the ball up the middle, keeping the Long Beach defense on their heels. With this approach, the backs stayed fresh, and got stronger as the game wore on. Prez scored the games first touchdown, to make it 6-0.

As with any successful running game, the blocking upfront was terrific. Offensive linemen Joe Creighton, Jack Kennelly, Kyle Wein, Tom Leggett, JP Moran, Marty Waters and Kieran "the anchor" McGoldrick pushed the Long Beach defenders off of the line and made holes for the backs to hit.

Desmond O'Malley had been on the injured list - but this week he strapped on his cast, and hit the field. When asked about Desmond going on the field under such tough conditions, Defensive Coach Harder explained, "Des has more guts than the breakfast buffet at Denny's." Wow, that says a lot about this young man's fortitude.

On the defensive side of the ball, these kids once again kept the opponent at bay almost the entire game. Defensive lineman Jack Anesner had a big tackle behind the line that set the tone. Cornerbacks Samer Bendery, Richie Mattone, Michael Randazzo and Joe Leto didn't let a single play go for a big gainer.

Linebacker Ryan Blair made more hits than Elvis, in what was easily his best game on defense. Monster backs Chris Hourmouzis, Cameron Kern, James Lark, and Albert Souissis keyed on the Long Beach running backs, and made sure they were kept in check.

Textbook Mattone, textbook!
On the final play of the game, Anthony Zinga recovered an on-sides kick to seal the victory.

As the season winds down, the Thunder Maroon returns to Stewart Field for their last two games. Next game is this Sunday at 12:30 against Bellmore.

Hope to see you there. GO THUNDER!
