Goalbusters Faster Than Lightning

Midfielder Cate Murphy maintains possession
(The Goalbusters contributed to this story, based on their own observations and experiences on the field)

The Goalbusters traveled to South Huntington to play a 12:10 match on Sunday, October 29, 2006. The wind was a tough factor in the first half with the Goalbusters having to catch up after two quick goals by South Huntington. However, the Goalbusters were able to turn the situation around with the change of direction and score three goals with the wind behind their backs. After the other team got the second goal our team was so pumped up to win. I knew we would win; I knew we were better and had to win.

Katie McCarthy had a good shot on goal in the first half. The ball was headed for the net until the wind caused the ball to swirl to the right and hit the goalpost. The defense had a tough first half, due to the wind. Everyone was happy when we had the wind on our side in the second half. We knew even though our team was down 2-0 at half, we would come back in the second half with the strong wind behind us. Once Maria (Sokolovic) scored, everybody was pumped and we just kept applying pressure on them. (We found our "MO"). Score was then 2-1. The Lightning was pretty physical on the field. We had to fight hard to keep possession or take possession of the ball.

Defender Kate Butcher guards "Ashley"
Defender Kate Butcher, received the ball in a clear attempt by the Lightning defense in their territory. The wind held the ball up. Kate was there with a high, lofty kick into the wind. The ball sailed over the Huntington goaltender, evening the score at 2-2. Kelly Reis got hit in the face with a ball, and went down. There was a drop ball, which Kara Zerille was chosen to take. Kara kicked the ball and played up the field to Mikaela Rix. Mikaela played a ball into the 18 yard box. Caroline Tarzian was there to shoot the ball and score, making the score 3-2, Goalbusters! Time ran out and the Goalbusters were victorious with a 3-2, come from behind win, over the Lightning.

The determination and resolve of the Goalbusters were tested at Sunday's game by unpredictable and unrelenting winds. But the Goalbusters were prepared and determined to overcome not only their opponents but Mother Nature as well. The girls want to thank the coaches, Bill and Pete, (Walt was away on business) for believing in them all the way to the end. Signed, Kate, Krysta, Carly, Christine, Elizabeth, Katie, Cate, Colleen, Mikaela, Maria, T, Caroline, Lauren, Emily, Kara.
