Committee BeginsAlumni Group
Submitted by the Committee To Save St. Paul's

Under the able leadership of Robert Reid, who attended St. Paul's for several years, the Committee to Save St. Paul's is forming an "Alumni for St. Paul's" subgroup, similar to the Committee's "Families for St. Paul's." Mr. Reid has contacted a number of graduates of the Cathedral Schools of St. Paul's and St. Mary's online, and has spoken to local resident graduates who are in support of keeping St. Paul's in the public domain.

The Committee to Save St. Paul's in reaching out to a broad spectrum of the community to inform people about its proposal for redevelopment of the Historic St. Paul's Main Building. In this effort, the Committee has given its response submission to the Village's Request for Proposal to the Garden City Public Library so that it may be on file in the reference section for resident review.

Mr. Reid has been receiving return emails from enthusiastic alumni. Here's a sampling:

"I would like to see the historic structure saved and used for the public's use," states Marc Berkow (Class of '72), and Vern Carroll, Professor Emeritus, University of Michigan, adds, "I can testify that the ethos of the school, all its properties, and buildings was always to be a (separate but) integral part of the community."

St. Mary's grads weigh in: 1988 grad Heather Carruthers Hall states, "I agree 100% that the St. Paul's school land should be maintained for public domain and not sold off to developers." And Lee Barber ('68) says, "As a St. Mary's grad, you get my vote!"

Kennedy Broadman II ('64) believes "a park or community center is a far better goal" than condos, shopping malls and such. Scott Brown remarks, "...of the many urban and suburban legacies I've encountered and admired over the years, those that stand out are those that have embraced a vision of a legacy left for future generations."

Steven Eaddy, Senior Vice President Public Finance at LaSalle Financial Services, ('74) says, "As someone who attended St. Paul's for all eight years, I am all for any attempts to maintain the structure and history of the building and the school."

St. Paul's grads and Village residents William C. Godfrey and Hank Harder, as well as Peter Godfrey who attended the school, are lending their support to the Committee to Save St. Paul's new group. Alumni of St. Mary's and St. Paul's who wish to join "Alumni for St. Paul's" can contact Rob Reid at robreid@optonline.net or (516) 746-7297.
