On a brisk fall day, the Garden City Xtreme traveled to Bethpage to play the Thunder last Saturday at Borella Park. It was the team's first experience in a "players only match" (no communication from the coaches and only cheering from the parents). The players liked the idea of having to think for themselves and handle some match situations without the coaches' help.
The Xtreme took control of the match from the beginning. Crisp and accurate passes put the Xtreme in the Thunder defensive third. In the first couple of minutes, the Xtreme created some good scoring chances, but were stopped or just missed with their shots. But at the six minute mark, the team scored their first goal and gained momentum that carried through the rest of the match. The Xtreme's well balanced attack had four different scorers in the first half. The defensive backs helped support and make attacking runs to further pressure the Bethpage team. When the ball was in the middle third, the team out hustled the Thunder. This allowed the Xtreme to put constant pressure on the Bethpage keeper and backs. Two more goals in the second half sent the Xtreme home with a 6-0 victory.
