A Word From The Publisher

We were glad that the Committee to Save St. Paul's was forthcoming with information about its proposal at the meeting held this week. While there are still questions that will need to be answered (such as "How firm is the $30 million renovation figure?" and "What happens if the grant money doesn't materialize?") at least now there is a rational basis for discussion of what to do with the building.

Certainly at this point the figure of $100 per household per year seems like it would be a palatable number, and the suggestion that the rental units be aimed at seniors will also prove popular. Whether the underlying financial assumptions are realistic will, of course, be the question.

We hope that after the Board finishes studying the other five proposals that the information from them can also be released to the public. Senator Hannon has told various people that he would like there to be popular support of a proposal before he submits Home Rule legislation to release the property from its parkland designation. The only way to build a community consensus is to allow the public to review the pros and cons of all of the responses. In a community with many residents who work in the financial sector, the public has a lot to offer.

On another note, our family greatly enjoyed a presentation at Adelphi University by a Nobel laureate physicist this past week who gave a wonderful talk about his work. The many children in the audience were very entertained and enlightened. Kudos to Adelphi for bringing such great cultural events to the community.
