Socially Speaking You can tell that we are getting near Halloween when the gremlins come out to play and they did, appearing two weeks ago, in this column. Nearly the whole paragraph was inserted into the second paragraph and the Birthdays and anniversaries got lost in the shuffle. I was alerted by a constant reader and made up for it in last week's column. Sorry about that, but again- it's Trick or Treat season. If you missed the Fall Foliage in up state New York or in New England cheer up. We are having a lovely time with it right here in Garden City as well as on Long Island. Check out all of the Arboretums that are close to us and enjoy. I have spotted some of our older Sugar Maples and am happy to see some new ones that have been planted. They really give a great shot of color to the Fall season. It was a Bridge week this past week in Garden City. The Garden City Community Church's Auxiliary held their Chrysanthemums Bridge on Monday, October 16th and enjoying the afternoon were Blanche Volz, Maureen Uzzi, Charlote Mitchem, Valerie Lemkul, Nita Johnson and Ellie Singer. It was well attended and many a lady left with a beautiful Chrysanthemum plant that was the Table Prize. Tuesday it was the turn of the Ladies Luncheon Bridge at the Garden City Casino and they too had a full house. The first Small Slam was won by Marie Kelly and Pat Dalton but everyone in attendance was a winner as they all had a great afternoon. Jean Priest, Harriet Carotenuto, Betty Bangert, Marye Heston, Dorothy Hedwig and Blanche Muller were all happy to be together sharing conversation between bids. It's the sharing and friendship that really makes these events so popular. Wednesday, it was the Cherry Valley Club's turn with their October 18th Dinner/Bridge and they too had a large group enjoying not only the delicious buffet dinner (along with the sumptuous desserts), but the nice evening of Bridge. There were 29 tables in play that evening and the first Small Slam of the night was brought in by Lucile Tilitz and Rosemary Ulmer in 6 Spades. Bi Grand Slam was made that night, but the Door Prizes (of a Gift Certificate to a local restaurant) were won by Miriam Benack and Muriel Urban. Others enjoying the evening were Adele Reilly, Marie Scott, Kris and Frank Harder, Marge and Les Schnell, and Barbara and Bill Haynes. Bridge Chairman, Dr. George Rivara announced that the next Dinner/Bridge would be held on Wednesday, November 15th and that reservations were a must. Moving right along to Thursday, it was the Woman's Club of the Garden City Country Club's turn and they too were bursting at the seams. They had a total of 41 tables in play following their Buffet Luncheon and it was not long before a First Small Slam was dealt, bid, and made by Ann D'Addario and Carmel Quill. There was no Grand Slam for the day but the Door Prize was won by a very delighted Bea Mercadante. Bridge Chairlady, Muriel Urban announced that the next Bridge would be held on Thursday, November 16th- giving the ladies plenty of time to get ready for Thanksgiving. Reservations are a must for this popular event. I do hope that you got your reservations in to the William Bradford Turner Post for their October Fest this coming Sunday. If you forgot you can give Fred Camp a call at 248-8472 and see if he can still fit you in. Also, don't forget St. Joseph's Rosary Altar Society's Fall Luncheon on Thursday, November 9th at the Orchid Restaurant from 12:30 to 4 p.m. Adele McConnell is taking those reservations at $29 per person. Happy Birthday wishes go to Joan Typermas and to Maggie Battista, who will celebrate their special day as we wind down the month of October. However, one lady gets special attention on her Birthday and that is Florence Dieterich, who was born on Halloween. Hope you get your Birthday cake served and eaten with the family in between answering the door bell for all the little goblins who are out celebrating Trick or Treat. All good luck for a wonderful day to all the ladies and for a year filled with health and happiness with many more good years to come. Happy Wedding Anniversary wishes go to Pat and Jerry Sheehan, to Clare and Dick Barbadillo, and to Fran and Dick Costello. May you all have a great day and a year filled with all your heart's desires with many more years to come. See you all tomorrow at Community Day.
