Garden City Library News
Nothing But The Truth by Avi is a thought-provoking examination of freedom, patriotism and respect. Ninth grader Philip Malloy is kept from joining the track team by his failing grades in English class. Convinced that the teacher just doesn't like him, Philip concocts a plan to get transferred out of her class. He breaks the school policy of silence during the national anthem and winds up in the center of a national controversy. Is this fair? Was he right? Join other young adults at he Garden City Public Library to explore these and other questions about the book at Yak and Snack. This group will meet at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, November 7th This is a public school holiday for Election Day/Teacher Conferences. Bring your lunch and the library will provide the beverages, snacks and desserts. Copies of the book are available when you sign up at the Young Adult Desk. Registration began on October 10th. Library Board Special Meeting There will be a Special Meeting of the Board of Library Trustees on Saturday, October 28, at 9:00 a.m. , in the Library Board Room. Magic Time There was magic in the air at the Garden City Library on Thursday, October 12th as magician Robert McEntee enthralled the audience with magic tricks, mind reading and optical illusions. The program included participation from members of the audience, both from their seats and when called on stage. For example, he asked for a meaningful date in a person's life. One person said, "1937" and another said "1945." Mr. McEntee added the two numbers, which came to 3,882. Then he showed the audience a card on which he had previously written the same number! He then asked one volunteer to give six other volunteers paperback copies of popular novels. He did not see which person got which novel. The novels were put into envelopes and shuffled. Mr. McEntee was then able to match each volunteer with the novel he or she had been given. Truly amazing! Funding for this program was provided by The Friends of the Library.
