During WWII, Long Island's focus changed dramatically to the aviation manufacturers and the people who faithfully turned out remarkable aircraft which helped us win the war. Long Island was a critical center of military aircraft production during the war. These aircraft were of superior quality and had a major impact on the course of the war. Local residents provided the manpower necessary for this massive production. Women and minorities were integrated into the workforce in large numbers for the first time. The demands of the war brought tremendous growth in the aircraft industry on L.I. By 1945, over 100,000 people worked in the aviation industry on L.I. A coordinated exhibit on "Aviation History" will be on display in the library showcases for the month of November courtesy of the Cradle of Aviation Museum. For more information call (516) 742-8405.
