Thunder Maroon 10's Extend Winning Streak

Kyle Harder goes for six.
Maybe it's the coaching. Maybe it's the practices. Maybe it's the post victory parties. Whatever the reason, the Thunder Maroon 10's continue to win. On a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Dutch Broadway Field, the Thunder Maroon 10's played a stellar game on both sides of the ball.

The opening play was a sign of good things to come. Marty Waters kicked a successful onsides kick that gave the Thunder great field position. QB Ryan Blair called the ol' bread and butter QB sneak for a quick eight-yard gain. From there things just seemed to go according to plan.

When asked how he prepares the kids for game day, Defensive Coordinator Bill Harder explained, "I just tell them what I've told them all year, another win, another round of Shirley Temples at McGeevers." Unorthodox for sure, but if it ain't broke don't fix it.

The key to the Thunder's success was the running game. The Offensive line continued its strong play, with Linemen Kyle Wein, Tom Leggett, James Lark, Kieran McGoldrick and JP Moran pushing the Elmont Cardinals off the ball, creating big holes for the backs to run.

Marty Waters kicks another boomer!
Running back Kyle Harder notched his first TD of the season, with a quick sprint around the right side. This kid runs with the type of reckless abandon that makes the defense not want to make the tackle. The new and expanded back field of Ryan Guarino, Liam Sugrue and Anthony Preziosi made big gainers that kept the clock moving and the Cardinal offense off the field.

A second half touch down by Prez, and half back option for the extra point put the onus on the defense to hold the lead, and they proved up to the task.

The Thunder defense had another strong outing, keeping the Cardinals from getting a single point. Defensive linemen Joe Creighton Mike Keating and Anthony Zinga got into the Elmont backfield often, creating havoc. The "Stinga" Zinga put it best after the game, "it's about heart, it's about pride, it's about passion."

Monster backs Cameron Kern, Albert Souissis and Jack Kennelly keyed on the Elmont running backs, making the right reads and big hits. Cornerbacks Joe Leto and Richie Mattone stopped any Cardinal from getting a big gain.

Richie Mattone catches the extra point.
This week the team has a well-deserved bye. The next game is Sunday October 22, 2pm, at Mineola. The kids hope to avenge their only loss of the season, against a tough Mineola Chiefs team.

Hope to see you out there.

Go Thunder!
