Joseph J. Berardino

Joseph J. Berardino, a resident of Stamford since 1999, passed away Sunday at his residence. He was 86. Born September 5, 1920 in Norwalk, CT. he was the son of the late Michael and Rose Corio Berardino. A graduate of St. Michael's College, Colchester, Vt. He was also a Lieut. in the Navy. During WW II he saw action in the D Day invasion on Utah Beach, as well as throughout the Atlantic and Pacific, and the Philippine Liberation. He married the former Gloria Gerace on January 28, 1950; she predeceased him in June of 2004. While they raised their family in Garden City, NY he worked as an agent for State Farm Insurance in Franklin Square, NY. He is survived by his loving children and their spouses Mary Anne and Edward Carey of Hawthorne NY; John and Regina of Fairfield, CT; Michael and Barbara of Katonah, NY; Joseph and Gail of Greenwich, CT; and Peter and Joni of Austin, TX. He also leaves his loving grandchildren Eddie and Elaine Carey, and John, Justin, Timothy, Marty, Samantha, Michael, Andrea, Allison, Genevieve, Dominia, and Sophia Berardino, his sister Antoinette Berardino of Rockaway Beach, NY and brothers Ronald of Garden City, NY and Sabino of Manhattan. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2-5 and 7-9 at the Leo P. Gallagher & Son Funeral Home, 31 Arch St. Greenwich, CT. Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday 11:00 at St. Michael The Archangel Church, 469 North Street, Greenwich, CT. Interment Putnam Cemetary, Greenwich, CT. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Joseph J. Berardino Scholarship Fund, St. Michael's College, One Winooski Park, Colchester, VT. 05439.

Richard Graves Cox, Jr.

Richard Graves Cox, Jr., a Garden City resident of 43 years, passed away on September 11, 2006 following a long illness. He was born in Akron, Ohio on July 24, 1928, the son of Richard Graves Cox and Esther Louise Williams. In 1950 he graduated from Yale University, New Haven, CT, with a BS in Industrial Administration. He was a graduate of the Naval Intelligence School, Washington, DC. He attended Fenn College, Cleveland, Ohio Mechanical Engineering 1954-1956 and Northwestern School of Business, Chicago, Illinois 1957-1959. He was a member of the Society of the Automotive Engineers. He served aboard the Battleship New Jersey as a gunnery officer in the Korean War and then on the Aircraft Carrier Leyte in the European theatre.

Mr. Cox worked in sales and management for various manufacturing companies over his career including Cleveland Graphite Bronze, a precision parts company, Cleveland, Ohio, Inpak Systems, a packaging machinery company, Chicago, Illinois and Schultz Engineering Corp, Queens, NY, a manufacturer of rewinding machinery for paper, film and foil products. Mr. Cox worked at Schultz for over 18 years where he managed global sales. When Schultz was purchased by Harden Inc., a British firm, he became VP and general manager. Harden was purchased by Elzner Engineering, Hanover, PA in 1989 and Mr. Cox became the sales and support manager for the Harden product line. He retired in 1993.

He leaves his wife, Edythe Evans Wohanka of Garden City, his sister Catherine E. Cox of Branford, CT, daughter Nancy Cox McSorley of New Canaan CT, Son-in-law, Edward McSorley and three grandchildren, Elizabeth, Ian and Cameron.

Dick served on the board of the Garden City Community Fund for many years as Director, Fund's Quota & Admission Chairman and as President in 1976. Before and after retirement he devoted time as a volunteer in an IRS program preparing income tax returns for senior citizens. He served on the board of the GC Senior Men's Club as Secretary. He was a long distance swimmer, a man that could fix anything, and enjoyed tending his garden, cooking, classical music and playing bridge with friends and his senior men's club buddies.

Funeral arrangements were made by Fairchild Sons, Garden City. Interment was private at Oakland Cemetery, Yonkers, NY.

Donations in his memory can be made to The Cathedral of the Incarnation, Garden City.

Nell Lile Glaws

Nell Glaws (nee Lile), 76 of Venice, Florida, formerly of Garden City, Lattingtown and Glen Cove, New York died on October 4 at the Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley, California. Ms. Glaws was a direct descendant of John Rolfe and the Watkins and Carrington families of Halifax, Virginia.

Ms. Glaws was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was a Garden City resident from 1964 to 1980, where she served with the Junior League and the Garden City PTA. Ms. Glaws enjoyed traveling and many sports activities, and participated in local golf and tennis organizations for over 40 years.

Ms. Glaws is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years, Walter Glaws, and her five children, Peter Glaws, Nell Zandberg, Charles Glaws, W. Reid Glaws, and Anna Davenport; and her sixteen grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial gathering was held on October 11 at the Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Florida. A private burial service was held on October 12 at Sylvan Abbey in Clearwater, Florida.
