Community Dance Project Taking Registrations

Training Core dancers are all smiles at their end-of-year demonstration last season.
Garden City Community Dance Project is still taking registration for Training Core!, a unique conservatory program in ballet and jazz for grades 4-7 that nurtures young dancers and readies them for the performing ensemble level. The class is open to all students and will run Tuesdays/Thursday 4-5:15pm from October through April at the Unitarian Church on Stewart Avenue. For more information, contact the company at communitydanceproject@yahoo.com or call Cristina at 747-0159.

Club Joins Beach Cleanup On September 16 th, 16 members of the Garden City High School environmental club (H.O.P.E.) joined with hundreds of thousands of people around the world in an effort to clean up beaches and shorelines. Last year, over 450,000 volunteers removed over 8 million pounds of trash from 18,000 miles of coastline in 74 different countries. As part of the cleanup, volunteers record statistics of the type and number of trash items collected. The Ocean Conservancy then compiles the data and issues a report, which provides the clearest picture of marine data currently available. In the United States, the top three types of debris collected last year were cigarettes, food wrappers, and caps and lids. Fifty six percent of debris originated from activities such as festivals, picnics, sports and other land-based beach activities. The findings demonstrate the importance of people taking responsibility for their own beach trash, not only at cleanups, but also all year round.

H.O.P.E. Club members were ready to go to Long Beach for the annual beach cleanup.

Garden City H.O.P.E. members received instructions on how to record data.
