In Memoriam
Ann Walsh a long time resident of Garden City passed away on September 20th, 2006.She was a graduate of "The" Mary Louis Academy in Jamaica Estates and St. John's University. Ann was a golfer ahead of her time. She was an eleven time club champion from 1968-1984 of the Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, N.Y. and member of the Women's Cross County Golf Association. She was also club champion of the Mariner Sands Country Club in Stuart, Florida. Ann was involved in many community activities including counting the collection at St. Joseph's Church, driving cancer patients, working at the Winthrop Hospital Thrift Shop and delivering Meals on Wheels. She was also a softball coach and brownie troop leader. Ann was a parishioner at St. Joseph's Church in Garden City, N.Y for fifty years. Ann was predeceased by her husband of forty-nine years, Edward Walsh Jr. in September 2003. Ann was the loving, caring mother of Edward of Newtown, Ct, Patricia of Manhattan and Timothy of Honolulu, Hawaii. Ann was a devoted and loving grandmother to Peter, Stephen, Bridget, and Connor. She also cherished her daughters-in-law Alice and Marie. Her humor, class, grace, determination and spirit, will be missed by her family and all of her friends which were many.
Grail S. Hanford, April 10, 1932 to September 23, 2006. Grail S. Hanford, the daughter of Agnes Kane Hanford and Warren Day Hanford was born in Far Rockaway, New York. She graduated from the Cathedral School of St. Mary in Garden City, New York and from Smith College in 1954. Miss Hanford was a reporter for the Tustin News and the Santa Ana Register in California in 1955. She became Associate Editor of the American Mercury Magazine from 1956 until 1959. She was the Editor for the Royal Globe Insurance Company magazine from 1960 until 1962. In 1962 she joined the American Legion Magazine and served in the positions of book editor, copy editor. She became Senior Editor in Washington and Indianapolis from 1976 until 1982. During 1982 and 1983 she was the editor and senior writer for "Writers for Business." She continued "Writers for Business" after moving to Florida in 1988. Miss Hanford was a member of the Board for the Cathedral School of St. Mary, Garden City 1967-1971; President of the Alumnae Association from 1967 until 1969; member of Horticultural Society, Indianapolis Museum of Art 1981-1986; President of Smith College Club of Indianapolis 1982-1984; a member of Indianapolis Press Club (Board of Directors 1980); member of the American News Women's Club of Washington, D.C.; President of West Coast Florida Smith College Club, 1996-1999. Miss Hanford was Member of Ivy League Club of Tampa Bay, Board of Directors 1989-1996 and V.P. 1991. Listed in Who's Who in America, niece of late Judge Kathleen M. Kane of Garden City and she is survived by her sister Agnes Rutledge Hanford of Tampa. There will be a visitation Thursday, September 28 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Marsicano-B.Marion Reed-Stowers Funeral Home, 4040 Henderson Boulevard, Tampa. A funeral service will be held on Friday, September 29, 2006 at 10:00 AM at Christ the King Catholic Church. She will be interred at the cemetery of the Holy Rood at Westbury, Long Island. A memorial service will be schedule at a later date at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church in Garden City. The family prefers either flowers or donations be made in her name to the Salvation Army or Life Path Hospice.
