Johns Hopkins Sophomore Emily Miller of Garden City was named a Second Team All-American by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Monday. Miller is the first NFHCA All-American at Hopkins since Lauren Carney earned first team honors in 2000. She is just the fifth Blue Jay in the 32-year history of the Hopkins field hockey program to earn All-America honors. More ... On Saturday, December 2nd, the Garden City Patriettes U10 girls' soccer team played their last game of the fall 2006 season against the Albertson Tigers. The Garden City (GU11) Sparks defeated East Meadow on Saturday 1-0 in the "title match". Garden City with 21 points was 1 point behind East Meadow and needed a victory to win the division. Liberty started off the season strong with an impressive showing in the Ref-fuel tournament. On Thursday, Novermber 30th, 2006, Garden City Girls JV Basketball played Our Lady of Mercy in a non-league game at Garden City High School. It was a tight game, but the girls were able to hold onto a three point lead for the victory. The final score was 22-19. Garden City's top scorer was Kerry Hosford finishing with 9 points. More ... Garden City's girls varsity basketball team faced Our Lady of Mercy on Thursday night November 30th at GCHS and won the game 53-52. Tricia Courtney led the scoring with 17 points, including three 3 pointers. The U-10 Demons concluded the 2006 season last Saturday by defeating the Manhasset Titans by the score of 4-2 on the strength of 2 first half goals from Carney Mahon and one each by Kevin Mullin and Dale Stasco. The Garden City High School Junior Varsity cheerleading squad recently participated in the Long Island Cheerleading Coaches' Association (LICCA) Rookie Competition at Mount Sinai High School. Middle school, junior varsity and varsity squads from across Long Island gathered to perform elaborately choreographed cheers for a panel of judges. More ... Congratulations to Garden City resident, Catherine Dickinson, as she placed first in the girls 12 & Under Division in the 29 th Annual Merrill Lynch Turkey Trot. A seventh grader at GCMS, Catherine finished the 5 mile race with a time of 36:47. Even with the rainy morning over 2,000 runners ran the race to support the Muscular Dystrophy Association. On December 2, the Garden City Xtreme concluded their very successful fall season with a 3-0 win over the Plainedge Dare Devils. The Plainedge team was very physical, but the Xtreme did not back down for a second. Their skill level was better than the Dare Devils which lead to more possession time. More ... An exciting start to the season saw GCAA basketball teams competing at the highest levels in the Island Garden Super League recently. The GCAA's 14 travel teams compiled an overall record of 13-12 playing mostly in the top divisions of the Super League with many of our losses by small margins. More ...
