GCHS Senior Wins National Writing Award
Garden City High School Senior Lauren Panariello, center, with Superintendent Robert Feirsen, left, and School Board President Kenneth J. Monaghan, has received a National Council of Teachers English (NCTE) Achievement Award in Writing. English Teachers Carlo Rebolini and Nancy Fleming nominated Ms. Panariello for the award last year. Applications are evaluated based on samples of student work, as well as on impromptu themes written under supervision, by a team of English teachers chosen from the home states of nominees. This year, 606 honorees were chosen from 2,080 entries. It is the fourth year in a row that a Garden City student has been recognized. Winning students and their schools receive certificates, and the names of winners and their schools are posted on the NCTE website. Students also receive cards highlighting their achievement to attach to their college application forms, and chief state school officers and members of Congress are sent letters notifying them of the accomplishment of the students and schools in their states.
