Adam D. Corrado, M.D.
Adam D. Corrado, M.D. Adam D. Corrado, M.D., of Garden City, New York, has successfully fulfilled the certification requirements of the American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) and was recently declared a Board diplomate.

Dr. Corrado, son of Ray and Gail Lynn Corrado of Garden City, an attending physician in emergency departments in rural Northern and Western Arizona, received his medical degree from the Chicago Medical School in 2001. He completed his post-graduate training as an intern at the Hospital of Saint Raphael in New Haven, and resident emergency physician at the Los Angeles County - University of Southern California Medical Center until 2005. In addition to his clinical duties, he is currently the Medical Director of the Lake Havasu Regional Emergency Medical Services System, supervising and educating over 100 EMTs and paramedics. Dr. Corrado also co-directs the paramedic training program at Yavapal College in Prescott Valley, Arizona.

Dr. Corrado, a Garden City School graduate of the class of 1985, began his career before he graduated in 1992 from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Arizona. After completing medical training, Dr. Corrado returned to Arizona with his family to begin community practice and resume service to the community as a reserve firefighter with the Central Yavapai Fire District.

In the early 1980's the population of the United States began demanding an improved quality of care in hospital emergency departments. In response to this demand, hospitals developed full-time emergency services dedicated to providing physicians trained in the provision of quality medical care to patients with life or limb threatening conditions. In response to this need, a number of physicians began limiting their practice to Emergency Medicine. In doing this these physicians also developed skills which would be critical to providing quality care in this environment.

The American Board of Emergency Medicine (ABEM) is one of 24 medical specialty boards of the American Board of Medical Specialities (ABMS). Founded in 1976, ABEM develops and administers the Emergency Medicine certification examinations for physicians who have met the ABEM credentialing requirements. The first certification examination was administered in 1980. ABEM has certified over 24,000 physicians since that time. Certification is for a period of 10 years.

In 2004, ABEM moved from periodic recertification to a program of continuous certification, a change that was directed by the ABMS. Diplomates must participate in the Emergency Medicine Continuous Certification (EMCC) program throughout the period of their certifications if they wish to maintain certification beyond their current certificate expiration dates.

Additional information on the American Board of Emergency Medicine, its examinations and activities, is available on the Board's website at www.abem.org.
