Building Character Through Song
Red Grammar with students.
Students at Stewart and Stratford Schools laughed and sang their way through lessons about food, language and geography last week at a special performance of "Hooray for the World" presented by noted children's entertainer Red Grammar. But teachers stole the show when, prompted by Mr. Grammar, they performed dance steps to the delight and applause of the audience.
Known to the students as "Red," Mr. Grammar has been described by Parents Magazine as "the best voice in children's music." In Mr. Grammar's hands, music and lyrics become building blocks for developing character in young people-a major goal of Garden City elementary school programs.
In "Hooray for the World," Mr. Grammar celebrates each child's unique abilities through songs that focus on character, caring and community. The goal is to help students gain a greater appreciation of the many ways children are both different and the same. The presentation included compact disks for both schools that will serve as learning tools and reminders of the performance throughout the year.

"Hooray for the World" was an Arts-in-Education presentation, a program coordinated by the Arts-in-Education Committee of the Garden City School District Parent Teacher Association funded by the Garden City Union Free School District.
