If you have had doubts about Global Warming these past number of days should have put them to rest. It's been Spring like and all you have to do is look at your gardens (or those of your neighbors) to see flowers still in bloom which should have faded into the ground long before this. You are correct in feeling that is because we have not had a hard frost, but the leaves seem to know it's Fall and that's what they are doing. Here we are past Veterans Day and it's close to 70 degrees. In another week it will be Thanksgiving Day and while we don't go over the river and through the woods in a sleigh our cars know the way through that white and drifting snow. The trouble is - it's still warm. I know I shouldn't complain, but at this time of the year I really do look forward to that little nip in the air and just think - what will Santa do without the snow?
The American Legion Post #265 here in Garden City held their services at the Memorial by the Garden City Library and they were very well attended. That is as it should be especially in times like these and I have known them to conduct these services in rain and snow. Commander John Donovan conducted the services with Joe Keating as Chaplain doing the prayers and Bob Rudkin performing the 11th Hour bells. Kathleen Rice, Nassau County District Attorney, spoke movingly and Taps were played very well by two members of our High School Band. Three Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge found each other and shared stories of where they fought as World War II was in its last stages. It was good to see them and good that they could be here with us.
Election Day is over and however you voted, it must be peaceful not to get all those phone calls, listening to all those commercials on both radio and TV, and getting all those mailings. But watch out - I hear that by the next election we may have some of those new "wonders" of voting machines and we will all have to take a course on how to work them.
The Election Day Fair at the Community Church is also but a memory, but there were many coming out with huge bags of goodies amd happy smiles on their faces. Ada Kane, Ellie Marshall, and Maria Covell were all busy working and helping the customers. Besides the voting booth, it's the place to be on Election Day and if I know these ladies they will soon be planning for next year.
Sue Hall has an especially big smile on her face and it is because she is an new Grandmother. Victoria Louise is the daughter of Mary Hall Sheahan and Robert Sheahan and we welcome the new little charmer and before you know it you will be able to see her as I'm sure that Sue will have photos to show. Congrats to one and all.
Doris Houswrith was a 50/50 winner of the Fund Raiser in April by the Telephone Pioneers. Congratulations to you too Doris - it couldn't happen to a nicer lady.
Garden City lost Roz Renouard who moved to Seattle, Washington to be near her daughter Jackie and her family. Roz's son was recalled to duty and is now in Iraq and we will all keep him in our prayers. Roz was a long time resident of Garden City and was active in the A.A.U.W. Her children graduated form the Garden City High Schools.
Happy Wedding Anniversary wishes go to Michael and Stephanie Balboni and to Fred and Dorothy Nimmich, as both couples will be celebrating just about Turkey time. May both happy couples have a wonderful day and many more years of wedded bliss in which to enjoy health and happiness.
Sylvia Ebert, Chairlady for the Study of Diversity for the Garden City Brunch of A.A.U.W. has arranged for a program by Celeste Hernandez, Director of the L.I. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, to address the group on "Concerns and Issues of the L.I. Hispanic Community." This will take place on Wednesday, November 29 at 1:30 p.m. at the Garden City Library in the small room on the lower level. If you are interested in the topic or in learning more about it and A.A.U.W do join them - they would be glad to welcome you.
Carol Efthimiou, Sue and Rob Alvey and their daughter, and Ruth Collins were all in attendance at the opening of the Art Show at the Garden City Historical Society House. The show will be open for the month of November and you should not miss it. Phoebe and Bob McMillan were also there admiring the beautiful paintings, photos, and sculptures by Garden City Artists and getting a good look at the new acquisitions from St. Paul's and St. Mary's Schools. It's part of our town's history so do go and enjoy it. The building will be open on Fridays, and Sundays from Noon to 5 p.m.
And now, I would like to wish one and all a very Happy Thanksgiving as you gather family around the table and do remember those serving in our Armed Forces overseas at this time.
