The Scouts take a break during their hike up the Appalachian Trail. The Boy Scouts of Troop 56 Garden City Community Church spent a recent weekend hiking at Harriman State Park. Included in the adventure was a hike up the Appalachian trail thru the Bear Mountain zoo and nature center, then a walk through the Twin Forts trail over a 110 foot suspension bridge over Popolopen Creek that linked Fort Clinton in Bear Mountain state park with Fort Montgomery. The Troop attended Fort Montgomery day where they witnessed 100 revolutionary war re-enactors firing muskets, with Calvary on horseback, along with a tour and talk on the cannon battery over looking the Hudson. Although the night was cold, the boys had a great time talking around a roaring campfire. There was plenty to explore, a river to cross, lots of history, real mountain climbing and great views.
