Garden City Library News

A Spooky Show

Just in time for Halloween, "The Ghost of Dorothy Parker" made an appearance at the Garden City Library on Thursday, October 26th at 2 p.m. This apparition appeared in the form of actress Diana Heinlein, who gave a bravura 60-minute tour de force solo performance in a play written by David Houston.

Ms. Parker also conjured up memories of her old friends including Robert Benchley, Alexander Woolcott and Edna Ferber. Two highlights of the performance were Ms. Heinlein's presentation of Ms. Parker's famous monologue "The Waltz" and a scene from "The Ladies of the Corridor," a semi-autobiographical play.

Curtain Call

The cast of Plaza Theatrical Productions "Meet Me in St. Louis" assembled on stage for a curtain call after its performance on October 29th at the Garden City Library. This concert version of the famous MGM musical had a cast of 10 and, in addition to the classic "Trolley Song," "The Boy Next Door" and "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas," featured seven new songs.

All In the Timing At The Library

The Township Theatre Group presented four one-act comedies at the Garden City Library on Sunday, November 5th at 2 p.m. Under the omnibus title of All in the Timing by David Ives, a talented cast of five actors delighted the audience with their various portrayal.

The undisputed highlight of the afternoon was The Universal Language, a gem of a play in which a nervous woman enters a storefront school to sign up for a course in Unamunda, a clever spoof of Esperanto. The school's founder and sole instructor speaks mainly in this foreign tongue and eventually, the audience began to understand every strange word.
