Girl Scouts Collecting Glasses

2006-10-20 / Community

Garden City Girl Scout Troop 1373 is collecting used eyeglasses of all shapes and sizes for the Gift of Sight Foundation! Glasses can be prescription glasses, prescription sunglasses and non-prescription sun glasses. The glasses that are donated will be cleaned, repaired and hand delivered to underprivileged people in developing countries around the world.

Collection boxes have been placed in the following locations, Cluett Hall at St. Pauls, the main office at Garden City High School, Girl Scouts of Nassau County Council Lobby (across from Roosevelt Field) and Key Food on Seventh Street. Boxes will be at these locations until November 8th. In addition, there will be a collection box at the High School during Homecoming.

Troop 1373 will also collect glasses door to door in some area of town on October 29th. In honor of Halloween Troop 1373 has selected this evening as "Sight Night." If your neighborhood has been selected for Sight Night we will place a flyer in your mailbox a few days ahead of time.

Troop 1373 has organized this project as part of the effort to earn the Girl Scout Silver Award, one of the most significant awards a Girl Scout can earn. Much of this award is based on the ability of young women to organize and complete a service project focused on social responsibility. If you would like to donate glasses and cannot make it to a drop off location please call our Girl Scout Leaders, Lisa 741-8414 or Lois 739-2505. A Cadette from our troop will come and pick up your donation. We thank you for your support!
