senior citizen flu shots

The Recreation Department, in cooperation with Winthrop University Hospital, the Nassau County Dept. of Senior Citizens' Affairs and the Nassau County Medical Center will conduct a flu immunization program for the senior resident of Garden City on Tuesday, November 28th. This is a free program.

The flu shot program will be held at the Senior Recreation Center of Golf Club Lane from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. There will be no out of pocket cost to participants in this program, but each senior should bring his/her medicare care with them and each should have their social security number with them as it will be needed to fill out their forms.

Preregistration is necessary for this program. You may preregister for the flu shot program by calling the Recreation Office at 465-4075 beginning 9 a.m. on Tuesday, October 31st.

Any senior who is a resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City, aged 60 years or older, is eligible to participate. For further information, please call the Recreation Office at 465-4075.

sewing at the new senior center at St. Paul's

Do you sew a little, and have a heart of gold? The Recreation Department is sponsoring a "sewing circle" at the new Senior Center at St. Paul's that will meet on Tuesdays at 1 p.m. to make fun items for hospitalized children. This group will open to all senior men and women who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City, even if you don't sew but are willing to learn. Bring your lunch if you wish and plan to spend the afternoon helping put a smile on a child's face. All materials will be provided, however bringing your own scissors will be helpful. Like to walk? Need to walk? Join our group of seniors as they walk at St. Paul's. The group meets on Thursdays at 11 a.m. at the new Senior Center at St. Paul's, walks, and then brings their lunch to enjoy at the Senior Center after the walk.

The Recreation Dept. will sponsor a workshop for seniors of the village on Wednesday, October 25 from 1-3 p.m. at the Senior Center at St. Paul's. The free workshop will cover the topic manage your medications safely. Don't let them manage you!! This workshop will contain tips on home safety and poison prevention led by Erin Perillo, LMSW, Public Health Educator, Winthrop University Hospital. There will be a discussion and a Q & A period following the presentation. If you would like, bring a brown bag lunch and enjoy it before the presentation.

Line dancing workshop for seniors

On Monday, October 30 from 10-11:30 a.m, the Recreation Department will offer a line dancing workshop at the Senior recreation center on Golf Club Lane. No partners are needed, just bring your dancing feet!! This highly enjoyable free activity will be led by Fran Gong, a popular expert on Line and Country dancing.

Our senior residents are invited to join Andrew Karen, recreation staff member, to "Board Game Tuesday" at the new Senior Recreation Center at St. Paul's. Andrew will be there every Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. to coordinate anyone interested in checkers challenges, chess matches, or any of our other board games kept at the Center. Feel free to bring a friend and visit our facility and see Andrew on Tuesdays for further information.

We invited any senior resident interested in getting out and socializing to bring your lunch to the new Senior Recreation Center at noon on Wednesdays. The new Senior Recreation Center is located in the Cottages behind St. Paul's on Rockaway Ave. All are welcome.

Our fall session of yoga will begin the week of October 2nd. Connie McKnight, our certified yoga instructor has designed classes with all ages in mind. Any resident of the Inc. Village of Garden City is invited to join these relaxing classes. The description of our classes is listed below:

YogaDoesit 1 (for relaxation and good health)

In this "gentle yoga" class, we'll explore and discover how simple yoga postures and breath work help to relieve stress, tension and improve flexibility and straighten muscles. Since yoga has been found to benefit everyone including seniors, those with back problems, headaches, sleeping problems and other medical challenges, all are welcome. So if you want to relax the mind/relax the body and learn more about yoga, please join us in this gentle yoga class. Bring a sticky mat, wear comfortable clothes and come to relax and even have some fun. Other props will be suggested at the first class. (This class was formerly Yoga over 50.)

YogaDoesit 2 (For relaxation and fitness)

In Yoga Does II, we'll explore and discover the many benefits of yoga. Yoga postures and breath work help to relieve stress and tension as well as straighten muscles and improve flexibly. This class will include more challenging postures (than YogaDoesit I). So if you are looking for a good workout as well as a way to relax the mind/relax the body, please join us. Bring a sticky mat, wear comfortable clothes. Other props will be suggested at the first class.

Each 10 ten week course will cost $50 and each class is 55 minutes long. All classes are held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul's. To register for any of these classes, please visit the Recreation Office in Village Hall.

Our instructors are up to date on the latest moves to keep you interested while exercising. Pat and Joy have years of experience and can show the individual how to modify the exercises to their levels.

To attend a single class, you only need to show on a given day and pay $4.00. If you would like to attend regularly, then we have 20 class passes that cost $60, a savings of $1.00 per class. The Recreation Department's new Senior Recreation Center, located in the St. Paul's Cottages off of Rockaway Ave., is now open Mondays through Fridays from 9 to 4 p.m. for use by Garden City's Senior residents. Seniors, aged 60 or older and their guests are invited to come and use our facility. For further information, please call the Recreation Office at 465-4075.
