A Special Education Seminar

Do you have the feeling that something is just not right? That maybe your child requires modifications in the academic setting or a special education program? Or maybe your child does receive special education services and you need more information?

This seminar will provide you with an overview of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act 2004 (IDEA 2004) and the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and how it pertains to your child. The Special Education Process from the initial request, timeframes, assessments, meetings and the development of the Individualized Educational Program (IEP) will be introduced. Organizing the paper trail and the importance of ongoing preparedness will be addressed. Most importantly, this seminar will prepare you to advocate for your child from an informed and organized position.

This seminar will be offered on Thursday October 19 at The Community Church of Garden City. Registration begins at 6:45 pm and the program will begin at 7:00 pm sharp. The speaker, Rosemary Swedenburg-Murphy, MPA, BSN, RN, LNC is the president of Renaissance LNC, Inc. Rosemary is a child/parent advocate who educates parents and assists them with navigating the special education process.

Rosemary not only has a personal interest in this topic but it is also her passion to share her knowledge and experience with others. "I find it absolutely uncanny how many parents I meet and speak with that have questions, true concerns about their children and so little information. Statistics bear out the fact that the earlier a child is identified with a learning disability and receives remediation the better their chances are of 'catching up'. The longer the process is delayed the less of a chance children have of catching up with their peers. This leads to issues of lower self esteem, at risk behaviors, and untapped potential that one carries for a lifetime."

Early Bird Registration is $35.00 prior to 10/14/2006, $40.00 after 10/15/2006 and walk in registrants will be welcome. Both parents are welcome for one registration fee. For further information please call 516 741-7284. Registration with payment may be mailed to: Renaissance LNC, Inc. 734 Franklin Avenue #303, Garden City New York 11530.
