Garden City Girls "Sweep" Art Show!

2006-09-22 / Community

KC, Erin and Alexis Alvey are the art powerhouse of the U.S. Congressional Art Show. Each sister has won the Grand Prize in U.S. Representative Carolyn McCarthy's district over the years. KC, the most recent winner, won for the oil painting, "Still Life," in 2006. Erin won with her drawing, "Clownin' Around" in 2004. It was a drawing of her sister, KC, and her friend, Pam. Alexis entered a still life in conte crayon and won in 1999.

Rep. Carolyn McCarthy's district consists of 15 school districts, each contributing the 3 top paintings or drawings from their high schools every year. The Grand Prize is a Studio Art Scholarship to Adelphi University. Adelphi is also the venue for the art show, at the Art Gallery in the Ruth Harley Center every May. From there, Grand Prize winners from each district go to the Art Gallery in Congress, Washington D.C., where they are on display for a year. The public is invited to view the show.

According to founder of the U.S. Congressional Art Show, Vermont Senator James M. Jeffords, "To the best of my knowledge there hasn't been a familial sweep like yours (the Alveys) in the history of the Art Show. Congratulations to KC, Erin and Alexis! I am very proud of the Congressional Art Show. It is hard to believe that it was 25 years ago that it all began. As I prepare to retire from the senate it has been bittersweet to look back at the years of the Art Show, but I am heartened to know that it will continue, and I am glad to know that it has affected students in a positive way all over this great country of ours."

KC (16) is currently a junior at Garden City High School. Erin (19) is a photography and cinema major in the Roy H. Park School of Communications at Ithaca College. Alexis (23) is a graduate of Cornell University and is currently a Masters student in Urban Forestry at Virginia Tech. The sisters are the daughters of Suzie Alvey, an artist and Robert Alvey, a scientist and founder of the Garden City Bird Sanctuary.
