The Club season has taken off with a "big bang" and you will soon be longing for the lazy days that have just passed with summer. The mail daily brings you club news of up-coming events and you are beginning to wonder where the days are going. Not only that, but Dates To Save are also coming out and two of them are: Garden City Community Day - when you have the Homecoming Parade and the Street Sales that go with them, to be held on Saturday, October 28 th, so do mark you calendar for that one. It is a real old-fashioned town event. The other is a Bridge date (you will not want to miss that) for the Garden City community church's Chrysanthemum Bridge on Monday, October 16 th. Get your table together and be ready to make your reservation for this one. Now, doesn't that start your calendar off?
Ira Prilik of The Prilik Galleries of Garden City has been writing a regular column on Antiques for the Long Island At Home magazine and you can learn a lot about antiques by reading it. You can also learn about one of your treasures by writing a description and sending a photo to: Ask Ira @ At Home, P.O. Box 233 Woodbury, N.Y. 11797. Ira has been active in The Friends of The Adelphi University Library and in The Garden City Historical Society and I'll bet if you give him a call he could either come to your home (if you have lots of nice things you want to learn about) or set a time for you to bring one into his shop on Franklin Avenue here in town. See how much easier it is to do your shopping and looking and learning right here in town.
John Donovan, Commandeer of the American Legion Post here in town is planning an "Octoberfest" for Sunday, October 29 th with lots of good old fashioned German food (it sticks to your ribs) at the G.C. senior center. Watch for more details to come, but Save The Date. John is doing a very good job so if you are a Veteran - join the Post - if not support them.
Carol Rilling and Diane Wall are Co-Chairing the Social bridge program for the G.C. Branch of the A.A.U.W. and their first bridge will take place on Monday, Sept. 25 th at 12:30 p.m. Bring a sandwich and then dessert and coffee will be provided. This is a Bridge for all levels of players and it's a relaxed, fun afternoon. Call Carol Rilling at 481-3771 for more information. The G.C. Branch will also hold their first Branch meeting on Monday, September 25 th at 7:30 p.m. at the G.C. Library. Chairlady, Jena Schmutz has arranged for Photographer Mildred Reilly to present a program with slides and narrative on "23 Years at the World Trade Center." Sounds good to me. Ann Senchyshyn will be in charge of the Hospitality for the evening.
Happy Birthday wishes go to Doris Stewart, who celebrates on the 28 th. That same date - the 28 th will also be celebrated by Herb LaTaille as it is his Birthday too. May all the happy B-day kids have a wonderful day and a great year ahead filled with health and happiness and many more years to come.
Happy Wedding Anniversary wishes go to Mimi and Richard Meismer and also to Ernie and Tony Zarcone , who will be celebrating their 53 rd Anniversary as September winds down. All the best to both happy couples and may they have many more years of wedded bliss and have nothing but good health and happiness.
We are just about ready to slide into October and the Long Island Fair at Old Bethpage Restoration Village will be having their big week-end at Old Bethpage. There is something for everyone and lots of fun for the children. Corn Husking contests, candy apples and peanuts, farm animals galore who have won ribbons for being best in their class, a Giant Pumpkin that you can take a chance on by guessing its weight, and you might even get an elephant ride in before you leave. Some Rough Riders could be there and stilt walkers and shows for the children and you can also visit the Old Bethpage Village. It will all take place the first week-end in October so make plans to go. You will also see some familiar faces if you go on the right day - and I'm not telling.
See you there or next week.
