Katrina Rescue Mission Team From Cathedral
The Cathedral missionaries from the top are Christine LeSueur, RuthAnn Collins, Charles Giersberg, Cathy Giersberg and Cathi Cavanaugh and in the first row are Marianne Santilli, Barbara Guy and Rosemarie Olivera. A group from the Cathedral of the Incarnation's congregation traveled to the Mississippi Gulf Coast to see firsthand the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina and to discover skills they never knew they had to help the ravaged area. The help was very much needed and appreciated by the victims of this natural disaster.
Camp Coast is a Lutheran-Episcopal effort to expedite the overwhelming work needed along the Gulf Coast. The participants were housed and fed in the gymnasium of Christ Episcopal Church of Long Beach. The staff of the camp provided the volunteers with jobs to do each morning and also encouraged them to go ahead and help with anything else they could do in addition to the assigned jobs. The volunteers learned how to fiberglass-insulate and roll paint and plumb an entire house. They also made fruit smoothies for the Second Street Elementary School for its school fair. The nurse volunteers administered to an emotionally and physically ravaged community.
The liturgical dancers at the Coast Episcopal School entertain the volunteers.
The final morning, the volunteers were the special guests of the Coast Episcopal School for a liturgical dance choreographed by Marianne Santilli, who had worked side by side with the children during the group's stay.
The Cathedral congregation is planning a Family Mission Work for the February school break from February 20-24. The trip will be geared toward children ages eight years and older. This is a great opportunity for children and adults to use their time, talent and treasures to further God's work. What a wonderful way to spend the Winter Break and share with your child a life changing experience. If you are interested, please contact Father Joseph Pae or RuthAnn Collins at 516-746-2955. All are welcome to join in this humanitarian effort.
