U-11 Demons Begin Fall Season
The U-11 Demons had all summer to reflect on their dramatic Waldbaum's Cup victory last June. After a bit of reflection, the boys got to work training in various programs during the July and August months all in preparation for this Fall season. Coach Tom Gillan and the team trained for the Oceanside tournament which was to be played during Labor Day weekend, but were rained out courtesy of Hurricane Ernesto. The team, raring to go, unleashed their power game against the Wantagh Seaford Blue Thunder coming away with a 4-1 victory.
It did not take the Demons long to establish themselves as Matthew Rogers opened the scoring off a corner kick as the Wantagh goalkeeper could not control the cross and Rogers made him pay by finding the back of the net. Several minutes later Jack Gillan scored on a header via a nice pass from Peter Escribano and the Demons had a 2-0 advantage. Defenders Carney Mahon and Jack Tigh were tenacious on defense in front of Ray Leto who was between the sticks for Garden City. Gregory Vouzianas scored the third Demon goal, a nice effort on a break in and the team was in command. Newcomers Danny Simmons and Dale Stasco, getting their first taste of Division 2 play made fine contributions as well. Simmons worked hard up front with fellow strikers Kevin Mullin and Jack Gillan, and Stasco took a turn in the net during the second half. Matt Rogers made the score 4-0 in the second stanza as he made a neat cut move to the inside leaving his defender before depositing the ball into the goal. Will Harrington, Mike Randazzo likewise did well to limit Wantagh's scoring chances. Wantagh finally broke through scoring on a penalty kick.
The team will have their home opener against Little Neck this Saturday at St. Paul's. Let's go Demons!
