Goalbusters Tie In Season Opener
The Garden City Goalbusters, a GU-14 travel team, played their 2006 Fall Season opener against the Valley Stream Liberty on Sunday, September 10 at St. Paul's. This match marked the first time the squad competed with their full roster of players.
The Goalbusters took the field, having never competed against the Valley Stream Liberty. It didn't take but a few minutes to realize that this match was going to take more than speed, excellent foot skills, and good passes to compete against Valley Stream. The Liberty is a very physical team. . Because of their quick, short passes that helped move the ball into scoring range, the Goalbusters were able to execute shots on goal in spite of the tough defense effort by the Liberty. Unfortunately, they weren't able to sink any in the net. Using their speed, the midfielders aided the squad's cause by moving the ball, outrunning Valley Stream up and down the field. On the other side of the field, the Goalbuster defense was successful in keeping most of the shots on goal by the Liberty from far range, especially in the first half of play. In the second half of play, Valley Stream started taking high, lofty shots from outside the box in a desperate move to erase the 0-0 score. However, Kate Butcher, goaltender for the Goalbusters, was a force to be reckoned with and was able to keep the Liberty from scoring. The match ended in a 0-0 tie.
The Goalbusters coaches, Walt Winchurch, Bill Mahoney and Pete Takach expressed their appreciation for the effort the Goalbusters displayed in playing this tough match. Moving on to the next match, the Goalbusters know they have a lot of work to do. This year's Goalbuster roster includes: Kate Butcher, Carly Cento, Krysta Cento, Christine Codignotto, Elizabeth Mahoney, Katie McCarthy, Colleen Mullin, Cate Murphy, Kelly Reis, Mikaela Rix, Maria Sokolovich, Barbara Sullivan, T Takach, Caroline Tarzian, Lauren Williams, Emily Winchurch and Kara Zerille. Good luck girls.
