Is it suddenly quiet around your house? If it is, you have a couple of reasons why this could be happening. 1. You have suddenly lost your hearing but if you can hear the telephone, the T.V., and the Door Bell, that is not the reason. 2. The children have gone back to school and the pitter-patter of feet and the slamming of doors has gone with them at least for most of the day. If you don't have children in Grades k-12 those college age kids went back too and they are also capable of creating noise around the house. What to do? Sit back and enjoy the quiet for awhile - it will all end when they come home so take advantage of it.

The Auxiliary of Clark Botanic Gardens will be holding an open meeting on September 24th at 1 p.m. with a Guest speaker - Dr. Tamsen Yeh, a noted horticulturist. Her topic will be "Beneficial Plants and Insects." Homebaked Refreshments will be served following the talk and the invitation to attend goes out to all interested members of the community. There is no fee. The invitation is also extended to Garden City residents and I know that Lois Ridgeway, Frances Tiernan and Virginia Musante will be there in addition to Jean Bliss and Mary Lou Piffer. Don't miss this one.

Joan and Frank Nedelka are back from a wonderful Caribbean Cruise and did they have luck. They got there after the first storm and saw all the sights they wanted to see, but left and came home just before Ernesto arrived. That's what I call good timing. Now Joan is busy getting ready for the Legion Auxiliary's Card party on Sept. 24th. She is also back to work at Adelphi University where she is on the Faculty.

The monthly Dinner/Bridge was held at the Garden City Country Club this past Wednesday, Sept. 6th and there were a total of sixteen tables in play following the buffet Dinner. A Grand Slam was made early on in the evening by Dorothy Alwick and Marilyn Camp in 7 Diamonds. Diamonds were certainly in style that evening as a Small Slam was made in 6 Diamonds by Athena and John Philippedes. Enjoying the evening were Pat Dalton, Lucille Tilitz, Nancy and John Pastula, Doris and Werner Forster, and Ada Kane among many others. Bridge Chairlady, Muriel Urban announced that the next Dinner/Bridge would be held on Wednesday, October 4th.

The G.C. Country Club was the setting the very next afternoon for the Ladies/lunch Bridge and there were 32 tables in play after lunch. The first Small Slam of the day was brought in in 6 Diamonds (again Diamonds) by Blanche Muller and Barbara Flanagan. Later in the day, A Grand Slam was made by Fran DeAngelo and Lucille Tilitz. The winner of the Door Prize was Marie Deery. Enjoying the afternoon of fellowship and bridge were: Gloria Tassone, Peggy Mumm, Maureen Uzzi, Joan Schieck, and Judy Radocy. Bridge Chairlady, Muriel Urban, announced that the next Lunch/Bridge would be held on Thursday, October 19th and to be sure to make your reservations for this popular event.

Happy Birthday wishes go to Ray Finnerty, who will celebrate on the 16th of Sept. and to Bob Rudkin, who will do ditto on the 21st. May both gentlemen have a great day (not too much cake please) and a wonderful year ahead filled with good health and happiness with many more years to come. Happy Wedding Anniversary wishes go to Betty and Hank Pupke who will be celebrating their special day on the 14th and also to Kris and Frank Harder, who will be doing their celebrating on the 16th of this month. May you both have many more years of wedded bliss and enjoy it in health and happiness.

The folks at the G.C. Country Club reclaimed their title of a real dancing club with their Sept. 9th Dinner/Dance. Not only did they have a full house for the Canapes and dinner, but the dance floor was never empty and the music of long time favorite, Lou DeLeo, was much appreciated by one and all. Enjoying the evening were: Claire and Dick Burns, Binnie and Lennie Enrico, Dave and Terry McIlravy, Jennie and Bill Pappas, Gloria and Arthur Meracante, Ginny and John LoSardo, and Maureen and Duncan Fraser - all dancing away the evening.

Double Headers are not limited to Baseball and the same Club hosted a members Appreciation Cocktail the very next afternoon. Believe it or not, many of the same folks were there enjoying each others company and the food. This is what keeps a club (any kind of club) strong - the sociability of the members.

Guess that's all for now and I'll see you next week.
