Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf, President of the Republic of Liberia, joined the congregation of the Cathedral of the Incarnation to worship at the 11:15 a.m. Mass. On November 8, 2005, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf made headlines as the first democratically elected female Head of State in Africa. A Harvard educated economist, she has held several high level posts, including Minister of Finance of her native Liberia and Assistant Secretary General of the United Nations. She has also served on various international committees related to human rights. But perhaps the role that this mother of four and grandmother of nine is best known for internationally is that of being one of Africa's leading promoters of peace, justice and democratic rule. She has campaigned relentlessly for justice in Liberia, a campaign that has resulted in imprisonment and several threats on her life.

On January 16, 2006 Mrs. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf took the oath of office as President of the Republic of Liberia. Many positive steps have been taken to improve the quality of life of the Liberian people. A new agreement has been concluded between Liberia and its International Partners that enables Liberia to draw on expert international assistance to improve its budgeting, expenditure management, and procurement practices and streamlines the granting of concessions. The agreement also establishes an effective process to reduce corruption and provide other support to key financial and economic institutions. Of significant importance during her brief tenure are the other improvements President Johnson-Sirleaf has brought to Liberia including electricity to certain parts of the country as part of the overall electrification program for the entire country. A potable water supply system is now in effect. The administration of Mrs. Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is primarily focused on the health and education of the people of Liberia.
