Congratulations to Julianne Ungar who has been selected as a National Merit Semifinalist. The names of approximately 16,000 Semifinalists in the 52 nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program were announced today by officials of National Merit Scholarship corporation (NMSC). These Academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,200 Merit Scholarship awards, worth $33 million, that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must advance to the finalist level of the competition by fulfilling several requirements. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, and approximately half of the Finalists will be selected as Merit Scholarship winners, earning the Merit Scholar title.

Established in 1955 specifically to conduct the annual National Merit Program, NMSC is a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. Scholarships awarded through the program are underwritten by NMSC's own funds and approximately 500 business organizations and higher education institutions that share NMSC's goals of honoring the nation's scholastic champions and encouraging the pursuit of academic excellence.

"Bright, intellectual, curious, involved, and talented are a few of the adjectives that best describe Julianne Ungar," said School counselor, Jim Malone. "While she has been very successful in our high school's most challenging classes, this accomplishment alone fails to paint the whole picture. She has been active in the community as a volunteer, is an accomplished musician, and somehow finds the time to participate in our track program, as well as being a member of "Kickline" each of the past four years. The Garden City community takes great pride in offering our congratulations to Julianne for being named a National Merit Semifinalist."
