The new U10 girls soccer team, the "Garden City Xtreme", participated in their first tournament this past weekend. The team played in the East Meadow Ref-Fuel tournament. The Xtreme played their five matches at the well manicured Soccer Park in Plainview. The weather was miserable, but the team did not let this distract them and played brilliant soccer, winning 4 of their 5 matches.
Starting in mid July, the team worked very hard on their skills and some basic tactics. They were more than ready to play against RVC and East Meadow on Saturday. The first match was very competitive, but the Xtreme defense shut out a talented RVC team 2-0. In their second match against East Meadow, the team applied constant pressure on the defense. They hit the back of the net three times, allowing only one goal.
On Sunday, the Xtreme faced a team from Bayport, which ended up being their fiercest opponent. There was end to end action, with Bayport up by three goals at halftime. The Xtreme fought back, but were unable to overcome the deficit. At the final whistle, it was 4-2 Bayport. Alberston was the next opponent. The Xtreme forwards were too quick and agile for the Alberston defense, scoring 6 times. The Xtreme showed great balance with six different goal scorers. Final score 6-2.
On Monday, the Xtreme needed to beat Glen Cove to secure second place. The team got off to a sluggish start, but took total control of the match in the second half and came away winners, 4-0.
The tournament was a great success and is just the beginning of lots of great soccer and many good times.
