Great Books Are Back
For the second year, the Board of Education and the Garden City School District, in conjunction with the office of Continuing Education, is offering an intergenerational "Great Books" Program at Garden City High School for the 2006-2007 school year.
All adult residents and high school students are invited to participate in this exciting program. Great Books will provide everyone with the opportunity to read and discuss classic works of literature.
Great Books discussions employ a method called 'shared inquiry.' Shared inquiry is collaborative and question-driven. A group explores an author's words for their meanings and implications and examines the many ways in which participants interpret and react to the issues the author raises.
The leader of the group is a Garden City staff member trained by the Great Books Foundation to conduct the discussions. All materials will be provided by the Garden City School District at the first meeting.
A guiding principle of Great Books is the belief that individuals in a group can reach substantial insight into a work by building upon one another's ideas.
The leader's role is to advance this learning process through careful questioning.
There will be eight 1 & 1/2 hour sessions from 7 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. in the evenings. October 11, November 15, December 6, January 14, March 6, April 11, May 16.
The only requirement is to read the book and enjoy the lively discussions.
Please come and join us in a stimulating and enjoyable pursuit of great literature.
